Crucial Conversations for Managing Dialogue

At Morris-Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services, we believe strong communication is at the heart of meaningful service—especially during moments that carry emotional weight and lasting impact.

Recently, our owner, Preston McKee , had the opportunity to serve as a volunteer trainer for a two‑day Crucial Conversations course hosted by Summit Leadership in Johnson City. This intensive training is designed to help leaders navigate high‑stakes conversations—when emotions are strong, opinions differ, and outcomes truly matter.

The group was exceptional. Over two full days, participants showed up engaged, thoughtful, and willing to lean into challenging topics. The conversations were honest, the practice was real, and the commitment to growth was evident throughout the experience. Watching leaders actively wrestle with how they communicate—and support one another in that process—is one of the most rewarding aspects of this work.

We were especially proud to have members of our own Morris‑Baker team, Bo Yelton and Daniel Dunn , participate in the course alongside other community leaders. Their willingness to invest time and energy into developing these skills reflects our shared commitment to professionalism, empathy, and continual improvement.

While Crucial Conversations is often discussed in the context of leadership and the workplace, its principles extend far beyond business. Learning how to communicate with respect, clarity, and compassion is essential in all areas of life—including the care we provide families during times of loss.

We are grateful to Summit Leadership for their continued investment in leadership development in our region, and for the opportunity to be a small part of that work. Experiences like this ultimately strengthen not only organizations, but communities—and we’re proud to be involved.

Hosting a Selected Independent Funeral Homes Roundtable

Earlier this month, Morris‑Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services had the privilege of hosting current and prospective members of Selected Independent Funeral Homes for a regional roundtable discussion here in Johnson City.

These gatherings are intentionally designed to foster open dialogue among independently owned funeral homes, providing space to share ideas, address regional challenges, and strengthen professional relationships—all in service of the families and communities we care for. Selected Independent Funeral Homes organizes meetings like these to support collaboration, learning, and peer connection among its members.

This week, we had the privilege of celebrating our local emergency workers with a special lunch, hosted in partnership with our friends at Firehouse Restaurant.

This event is more than just a meal—it’s a tradition rooted in gratitude and memory. We remember with deep appreciation how our local firefighters stood by our former owner, Carson Baker, after the passing of his beloved wife, Dot Baker. Their kindness during that difficult time left a lasting impression on our family and our funeral home.

After Dot’s passing, Carson found comfort in the unwavering support of his friends at the fire station. Their kindness went far beyond duty—they offered him companionship, shared meals, and a sense of belonging during one of the hardest times in his life. That generosity and friendship will never be forgotten.

Today, we carry on that tradition. By serving lunch to our emergency workers, we honor not only their service but also the legacy of kindness and connection that Mr. Baker cherished so deeply.

To all our firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and first responders—thank you. Your dedication does not go unnoticed, and your compassion will always be remembered.

When Imelia McAllister was studying criminal justice at East Tennessee State University, she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do after graduation. One of the professional fields that interested her was funeral service, so she began exploring it.

“I was looking into mortuary school,” Imelia says, “but I didn’t want to rush into it because I wanted to be positive that it was the right step for me.”

When Imelia saw the job posting in front office administration at Morris-Baker, she decided to apply. “I liked the fact that it was a family-owned business, and everyone was so nice when I came to interview,” she says. “I started here with reception hoping to see how I would feel about becoming a funeral director.”

Imelia did see. As the months passed—and her skills and knowledge deepened—she learned a lot more about the field. “I decided that becoming a director wasn't for me, but I have also discovered that I enjoy working on the administrative side and helping out in that way.”

She has also discovered how different a funeral service staff can be in contrast to the stereotype. “You see all these portrayals of people in the funeral business as being very stuffy and strict, but everyone that I have talked to in this business is so kind and funny and just a delight to be around,” she says. She adds, “Everyone here is so helpful. They really make me feel like there are no stupid questions.” There never will be.

We’re happy that Imelia came to Morris-Baker and that although path might not have been the one she thought she would be on, that she’s on a path with us.

“It Felt Like a Calling”

Katie Johnson was inspired by her older brother to go into funeral service industry. “My brother, Chris, is 16 years older than I, and when I was a young child,” she says, “I remember him working on his mortuary science homework.” She also recalls touring one of the funeral homes where he worked. “I was so intrigued.”

When Katie started community college, she hadn’t yet decided that she was going to pursue a degree in mortuary science, “But when a school counselor asked me what degree I was striving for, I naturally answered ‘funeral service.’ From there on I took the prerequisites for mortuary school, and it felt like that’s what I was supposed to be doing,” she says. “It felt like a calling.”

Eventually Katie got her bachelor’s of science degree in mortuary science from the University of Minnesota, just as Chris had done years before.

Originally from Minnesota, Katie grew up in Minnetonka, a suburb of the Twin Cities. After graduating from high school, she moved to Belle Plaine, a rural farming community an hour south of Minneapolis. She worked in her home state before relocating to Johnson City this year to join the Morris-Baker staff. “After meeting the staff and seeing Johnson City,” she says, “I felt very optimistic that this would be a good move for me.”

When asked what she likes most about working for Morris-Baker, she says, “I appreciate the integrity with which the business is run, an emphasis on the value in funeral service, and how fairly the staff is treated.”

When not at work, Katie loves spending time with her family. She also spends a lot of her time helping animals: she volunteers at rescues, shelters, and sanctuaries. She also likes travel, hiking, horseback riding, and spending time with friends.

We are so glad to have Katie on staff with us, and we hope she will stay with us for many years to come.

Get to Know Us...

Dillon Wines, Morris-Baker’s Assistant Operations Manager, knew he wanted to work in funeral service from a very young age. “I always made sure our family pets had a proper funeral and burial,” he says.

Originally from Newport, TN, he graduated from Cocke County High School and then got a mortuary science degree from John A. Gupton College. He has spent his entire career working in funeral service.

He was drawn was drawn to work at Morris-Baker Funeral Home because of it being the last both locally-owned and family-owned funeral home in Johnson City. “I like working with so many unique people who are all so passionate about taking care of families,” he says.

Dillon brings a positive attitude, attention to detail, and kindness to his work. His thoughtfulness and care is evident in how he spends time outside the office: Recently he has taken on the work of helping save monarch butterflies, which are being reviewed every year as a potential endangered species because of their decreasing population and the increasing threats to their survival.

Dillon grows his own native milkweed—an important host plant for these butterflies—and shares its seeds with others who want to grow it. Milkweed has chemical compounds that make monarch caterpillars poisonous to predators—thus giving the caterpillars a better chance of survival. Dillon says, “I am also raising monarch caterpillars by hand ensuring they are safe until they emerge, and then I re-release them.”

Dillon also loves spending time with his two dogs and getting out in nature.

We hope Dillon is with us for many years to come, and we are thrilled he is a part of our team and family.

Here’s something you should know about Rocky Saylor: he has a beautiful singing voice. This comes as no surprise once you know a little more about his roots. His mother used to sing every weekend with the family singing group, usually at churches and sometimes at high schools, traveling all over to perform.

Talent clearly runs in this family. Rocky sings bass and has performed at the Maranatha Tabernacle Church in Unicoi.

Originally from Johnson City, Rocky graduated from Daniel Boone High School and now lives in Jonesborough. When asked about why he went into funeral service, the story leads to Carson Baker, former owner of Morris-Baker and grandparent of its current owner, Preston McKee. “Carson was probably the biggest influence because he was a wonderful person,” Rocky says.

Over 20 years ago, Rocky met Carson because Rocky was working at Asbury Center, a local nursing home, where Carson’s mother was living at the time. “Every day at 8:30 in the morning, Carson would visit his mother, and over time we got to know each other,” Rocky says. “Carson asked me about working at Morris-Baker part-time. I’d never thought much about it until I met him and realized who he was and what he did. I started part-time and then moved to full-time, and I’ve been here ever since.”

Here’s another thing to know about Rocky, if you haven’t guessed it already: he’s loyal and steady, two things Morris-Baker still really appreciates, especially two decades later.

Get to Know Us: Daniel Dunn, Funeral Director

Meet Daniel Dunn...

With a minister for a grandfather and a deacon for a father, Daniel Dunn was no stranger to going to funerals in his youth. His mother told him that his first trip out of the house as a newborn was to his great-uncle’s funeral.

Although he was young, Daniel says, “I always loved how the funeral homes helped those grieving at the loss of their loved ones. The atmosphere was always formal but also loving and respectful.”

Funeral service was not his first nor is it his only career. While attending community college after high school, Daniel “was called to preach.” He enrolled in World Christian Ministries and began his study for the ministry, achieving a certificate in both Old and New Testament Studies with honors and a certificate in pastoral counseling. He was recognized for his work in local churches and received an honorary Doctor of Divinity. Daniel is a church-ordained and licensed preacher. He has pastored three local churches during his 24 years of ministry.

While preparing for the ministry, teaching, and preaching, Daniel worked full-time for Loomis Armored Services for ten years and for First Tennessee Human Resources Agency for five years.

“We may meet many people throughout our life’s journey, but there are some who can really make a difference,” Dunn says. “Those are the special ones.” One person who unknowingly had a profound impact upon Daniel’s life was David, a funeral director. Daniel met David while he was still in high school. Daniel won a writing contest about the dangers of drinking and driving, and the prize was a limousine ride to the senior prom from a local funeral home. David was the “chauffeur.” Daniel says, “David was a total professional and helped the event to be memorable. He impressed me with his demeanor and occupation.”

Years later, Daniel and David would meet again when Daniel’s father and grandfather passed away. David would be the funeral director undertaking the arrangements and preparations for the services. “I will never forget how caring, kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable David was. He truly helped me and my family at the time we needed help the most. If I could only help others as David helped us in our time of grief, then that is what I want to do,” Daniel says. “I think of him when I think of why I am in funeral service today.”

Daniel is a 2023 graduate of John A. Gupton Mortuary College in Nashville, Tennessee, and he is ready to serve families who call these mountains—and beyond—home.

Get to Know Us: Mike Richards, Continuing Care Coordinator

Mike Richards became a part of the Morris-Baker team five years ago, but his role has evolved as time has passed, and we are happy he is now our continuing care coordinator.

Having worked in the ministry for nearly two decades, Mike first became interested in the funeral industry because of his passion in ministering to and helping people. “It is often through the loss of a loved one that people are in the most need of comfort,” he said.

When Mike first began working at Morris-Baker, he was a part of a team that transported loved ones, after death, from their homes or hospitals to the funeral home. “It was an honor to be the first representative of Morris Baker to these families in the midst of their initial loss. Allowing family members to take their time with loved ones and relish those last private moments matters,” he said. “Assuring family members that their loved one would be cared for and respected was a way to comfort them in their darkest hours.”

Mike also became certified as a funeral celebrant with Morris-Baker so he could provide a funeral or memorial service personalized and individualized to reflect the personality and lifestyle of the family’s loved one.

As continuing care coordinator, Mike helps families in planning ahead for services before the time of a loved one’s passing as well provides support and grief resources to families in the days and weeks and even months following the passing. “Becoming a part of people’s lives matters to me,” he explained. “I am passionate about following through and continuing the make sure that families are healing and finding the resources they need for support.”

Morris-Baker has been a good fit for Mike and his commitment to helping people. “I love the camaraderie of the team members. I appreciate that our common goal is to care for and support families,” he said. “What has surprised me most is realizing that in the center of extreme loss and turmoil, if there is a group of dedicated employees focused on the goal of tending to a family’s needs, even joy can be experienced in the midst of darkness.”

Morris-Baker Funeral Home has received a national, prestigious award for innovative programming and outstanding community outreach.

Morris-Baker Funeral Home was one of only 104 funeral homes from throughout the U.S. and around the world honored with the 2023 National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) Pursuit of Excellence Award, placing it among an elite group of funeral service professionals. Pursuit of Excellence Award recipients raise the bar on funeral service excellence by adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards and providing unsurpassed service to families and communities.

In addition to receiving the 2023 NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award, Morris-Baker Funeral Home was one of nine funeral homes that received the Best of the Best Award in recognition of their development and execution of an innovative program or service that had a positive impact on the families and communities they served this year.

To earn an NFDA Pursuit of Excellence Award, a participating funeral home must meet or exceed business standards set forth by the program and demonstrate proficiency in key areas of funeral service, such as compliance with state and federal regulations; providing ongoing education and professional development opportunities for staff; offering outstanding programs and resources to bereaved families; maintaining an active level of involvement within the community; participating and actively serving in the funeral service profession; and promoting funeral home services through a variety of marketing, advertising and public relations programs. Participants are also required to adhere to a Pledge of Ethical Practices.

Morris-Baker Funeral Home earned the Best of the Best Award for creating a workshop offering seminarians, chaplains, and local clergy the chance to have a deep dive and conversation about the needs of people in grief, the value and power of the funeral process, and how to develop the skills to create healing and restorative tributes for their members or those they serve, as well as developing collaboration and communication with funeral professionals.

“Our goal was to support seminarians, pastors, ministers, chaplains, and local clergy to give them more tools in their toolbox to create meaningful funerals for families, “ said Preston McKee, owner of Morris-Baker. “I’ve had a vision since 2019 for this kind of program, and I was so pleased to hear what kind of impact it had. We hope it is only the beginning.”

The workshop, called "The Sacred Journey: A Conversation Between Clergy and a Celebrant in Partnership,” was developed in partnership with a local seminary as well as Glenda Stansbury, Co-Founder and Dean of InSight Institute Certified Celebrant Program. The program took place in May, 2023.

Not only are they serving grieving families with dignity and compassion, but they are finding meaningful ways to support and give back to the community,” said NFDA Director of Public Relations Jessica Koth, who manages the Pursuit of Excellence Award program. “The Pursuit of Excellence Work Group was very impressed by this year’s entries and enjoyed reviewing each and every one. The Work Group applauds Morris-Baker Funeral Home for their hard work and dedication to providing a superior level of service to families and communities. We are proud to have them as part of our NFDA family.”

This week, the Morris-Baker Wildfire won the Johnson City American Little League Championship! The final score was 10-9 against Al’s Deli Bombers. Both teams played well and made a great showing.

This is the third year in a row that Morris-Baker has proudly sponsored this Johnson City American Little League team, and we are so happy for Morris-Baker Wildfire.

Johnson City American Little League has been around since the mid-1950's. It’s one of the oldest area Little League-sanctioned youth baseball leagues. It offers several divisions: Wee-Ball (for kids 3-4), Tee-ball (4-6), Coach Pitch (6-8), and Kid Pitch (9-12).

The Wildfire is one of the Kid Pitch (Major Division) teams.

A big congratulations to all the players! Go, Morris-Baker Wildfire!

Seminar Held to Support Clergy Leading Funerals

Current times and societal shifts are creating more "unconventional" funerals, so Morris-Baker, in partnership with Emmanuel Christian Seminary, held a seminar to help ministers and chaplains be better prepared when called to both lead these services and to navigate the family dynamics that often accompany them.

Glenda Stansbury—a licensed funeral director and co-creator of Certified Funeral Celebrant Training—led the seminar. Glenda has officiated over 4,000 funerals and helped train thousands of funeral celebrants to be more prepared for these unique and difficult situations.

To thank emergency workers for their service to the community, Morris-Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services and The Firehouse Restaurant hosted their annual Public Safety Appreciation BBQ Lunch for employees of the Johnson City Fire and Police and Departments, Washington County EMS, Sherriff’s Office, 911 Dispatch, and ETSU Public Safety.

The BBQ was prepared and served by The Firehouse, and The Firehouse and Morris-Baker team members served any and all emergency workers who showed up to get some lunch.

Happy Retirement to Calvin James

Calvin James recently retired from full-time employment with Morris-Baker, and we gathered this week to celebrate his transition to a part-time role with the company and to honor him and his decades in the profession. Although we will miss seeing him every day, we are happy that Calvin will have more time for his grandchild, camping by the river, and watching Kentucky Wildcat basketball.

At the party, Calvin regaled us with stories from his career, and his wife Margie made us laugh and cry with her own stories of Calvin.

Calvin will continue as a valued part of the Morris-Baker team, and we can't thank him enough for his many years with Morris-Baker and his commitment to helping the next generation of funeral directors.

Remembering Loved Ones We Have Lost

Recently Morris-Baker held its annual Candlelight Holiday Memorial Service to remember those community members who have died and to honor the families who have experienced these losses. After the service, we held a reception to provide fellowship and community to everyone who attended. It was the first event we had held in our newly renovated Oak Hall, and we hope it provided the warmth and peace that all of us seek in this season.

Morris-Baker Receives National Recognition

The American Legion honored Morris-Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services as the Employer of Older Veterans (small business category) for the Year 2022, during the August National Convention held in Wisconsin.

Morris-Baker was nominated by the King’s Mountain Post 24, Johnson City, earlier in the year for employing senior Veterans and for its exceptional performance and service to the Veterans of Washington County & Johnson City. The Department (state) of Tennessee, American Legion, selected Morris-Baker as its nominee for the award and forwarded the nomination to the National HQ selection committee.

Accepting the national award is Preston McKee, Owner & Funeral Director, Morris-Baker Funeral Home, presented by Post Commander Scott Scharper and Robert Hensley, National Executive Committee member.

A Note about Kibbi, Our Beloved Therapy Dog, from Her Owners, Preston and Shuly

We picked Kibbi as our dog because her breed—Lagotto Romagnolo, or Italian water dog—is known to be good with families and kids. We knew we wanted her to be a therapy dog for the funeral home, and when she was just a few months old, we started her training toward this goal. At just under a year old, she passed her test and was certified as a therapy dog through Therapy Dogs International.

Kibbi loved her therapy work, but she had other great loves: her ball (which she knew how to retrieve perfectly but often chose to hold onto because she didn’t want to give it up) and swimming. She was a water dog, after all. She was happiest when pumping her little legs around Boone Lake, but she would also relish standing in any body of water, even a puddle.

Kibbi was super smart—she knew what we were going to do before we even did. She was sweet and stubborn and mischievous and shy at first but always, eventually, playful. When she was working, she was obedient and generous. She was scared of thunder and hated being alone, but we took her everywhere we could—on errands, to restaurants, on vacations. She had several good animal friends over the course of her life: Nestor García, Kenzi, Serene, Tanner, Sasha, and Kitty. She loved to roll in stinky stuff, dig holes in our mulched beds and plop into them, and run like crazy.

A friend of ours told us once that he noticed that she wagged her tail all the time, and she did. She reminded us to find happiness in the moment. She brought comfort to people in her therapy work, and she brought us joy every day. We often said she completed our family.

This week, after she’d had enough battling with medical issues, we had to put her down. We will never be the same.

She was like the third leg of a stool, and now that she is gone, our stool wobbles terribly. But we have each other, and we will always have our love for her.

Camp Firelfy will take place on Saturday, Sept. 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Warriors’ Path State Park, Kingsport, Tenn.

To thank emergency workers for their service to the community, Morris-Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services and The Firehouse Restaurant hosted their annual Public Safety Appreciation BBQ Lunch for employees of the Johnson City Fire and Police and Departments, Washington County EMS, Sherriff’s Office, 911 Dispatch, and ETSU Public Safety.

The BBQ was prepared and served by The Firehouse, and The Firehouse and Morris-Baker team members served any and all emergency workers who showed up to get some lunch.

Morris-Baker Donates "Puppies" to Niswonger Children's Hospital

Morris-Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services donated a litter of over 70 plush “puppies” to the Child Life Department of Niswonger Children's Hospital. Kibbi, the Morris-Baker therapy dog, was on hand to help present the gift.

Morris-Baker owner Preston McKee and Kibbi have volunteered in Niswonger’s pet therapy program for eleven years, visiting patients and staff at the Children’s Hospital every month. However, due to current Covid restrictions, the pet therapy program has been paused. McKee decided he still wanted children to benefit from something soft and comforting to hold, so he purchased the Kibbi look-alikes for Niswonger staff to hand out to patients.

“We’ve found that at our funeral home, this stuffed toy gives comfort to a child,” McKee said. “Interacting with a pet is hugely helpful, but when Kibbi happens to be out of town, we offer this so that the child has something soft and cuddly to comfort them during their difficult times.”

Morris-Baker is locally owned and operated and committed to programs that support grieving families and caregivers throughout the year.

Meet Our Staff: Rhonda Edens

Rhonda Edens grew up in Johnson City and attended ETSU. When she started her career, though, she did not expect to work in the funeral service industry. She spent twenty years working for the Washington County Health Department as a bank cashier and later as deputy registrar.

But because of her career in the Health Department, Rhonda knew people in the funeral service industry.

“I worked with different funeral homes completing death certificates. Morris-Baker staff just stood out above all the other funeral homes as they worked tirelessly to get whatever was needed done for each client.”

The kind of customer service that Rhonda saw Morris-Baker staff exemplify was the kind of customer service that she believed in, and this inspired her to consider joining our staff.

In spring 2021, Rhonda joined the Morris-Baker family as reception and administrative assistant. She says that what she likes most about her job is the “interaction with families we serve, and on their worst days being able to help them cope with the loss of their loved one.”

Rhonda is married with two adult children and a grandchild. When she is not working, Rhonda enjoys reading, swimming, going to yard sales, and spending time with her granddaughter. “We love watching sports,” Rhonda says.

We’re so happy that Rhonda has joined our team, helping keep our operations running smoothly and offering a kind and warm presence to anyone who calls or walks through our front doors.

“The generosity shown to me and each family we serve is positively overwhelming,” she says.

We think the same of her.

Meet Our Staff: Mark Finucane

Originally from Buffalo, New York, Mark Finucane moved to Johnson City to attend ETSU, and after graduating, he remained here to work with the Johnson City Fire Department. It’s because of his work with the Fire Department that he became connected with Morris-Baker: He got to know Carson Baker, who owned and operated Morris-Baker many years before his grandson, Preston McKee, became the funeral home’s owner and operator.

“Mr. Carson Baker was a close friend of the Johnson City Fire Department,” Mark says. “Through the years, many of the firefighters came to know Mr. Baker personally. He would visit with us on a regular basis and occasionally invite some of us out to lunch.”

Mark explains, “Mr. Baker had a great interest in all fire department operations and was a subject-matter expert on our fire engines and ladder trucks. I would attend funerals at Morris-Baker and saw how the staff operated and thought I would enjoy this type of service-related job and working for Mr. Baker when I retired.”

And that’s exactly what Mark did.

Now with Morris-Baker for many years, Mark is a funeral assistant. He says what he likes the most about working at Morris-Baker is the caring teamwork atmosphere in providing the highest level of service to our customers. “There are so many intricate tasks that must be coordinated and accomplished in order to provide excellent service to our customers,” he says.

Mark is married and is involved in several community organizations, including United Way of Washington County, Up & At’Em Inc., ETSU Biological/Chemical Safety Committee, and the City of Johnson City Golf Advisory Board. In his free time, what there is of it, Mark enjoys physical fitness, travel, golf, reading, and watching sports.

We are thrilled to have Mark as part of the Morris-Baker family, and we hope his career with us continues to be a long one.

According to the National Wildlife Federation, "Rapid and large-scale changes to our lands and waters mean wildlife are losing the habitats they once knew. Morris-Baker Makes Donation to Niswonger Children's Hospital

Preston McKee, Morris-Baker president, presented a check for $525 along with $250 in gas cards to the Child Life Department of Niswonger Children's Hospital.

The $525 funds were raised from Morris-Baker’s Stress Management Seminar with Dr. Amit Sood. Both seminar participants and Morris-Baker gave to these funds.

The gas cards were from Morris-Baker. After hearing a presentation by a Niswonger child life specialist, Preston learned that families often rush to the children's hospital without gas money to get home. These cards are to help those families in their time of need.

Preston and Kibbi, the Morris-Baker therapy dog, have volunteered at Niswonger for eleven years (since Kibbi was one year old), and Morris-Baker wants to continue to support the hospital in whatever ways we can.

Meet Our Staff: Daniel Dunn

With a minister for a grandfather and a deacon for a father, Daniel Dunn was no stranger to going to funerals in his youth.

“I always loved how the funeral homes helped those grieving at the loss of their loved ones,” he says. “The atmosphere was always formal but loving and respectful.”

Funeral service was not Daniel’s first nor is it his only career. After attending community college for two semesters, Daniel says, “I was called to preach,” and he enrolled in World Christian Ministries and studied for the ministry. He has pastored at three churches in his 21 years of ministry. He also worked in security as well as in human resources.

But people can influence your path in life, even when you might not realize in the moment that a particular person is having an impact. For Daniel, that person was David, a funeral director Daniel met when Daniel was in high school and he won a writing contest whose prize was a limo ride to the prom from a local funeral home. The “chauffeur” ended up being David.

“He was a total professional and all around nice guy,” Daniel recalls. “He impressed me with his demeanor and occupation.” Later, in his first funeral service job, Daniel worked alongside David, and David also served Daniel’s family when Daniel’s grandfather and father passed away.

“David made a big impact to me,” Daniel says. “I think of him when I think of why I am in the funeral service today.”

Daniel says he came to Morris-Baker for two reasons: “Morris-Baker served my family in such a loving, sympathetic, professional way during such a difficult time, and Morris-Baker has an outstanding reputation for being the best funeral home in this community.”

Currently Daniel is an apprentice with Morris-Baker, and he is attending John A. Gupton Mortuary College.

“My biggest surprise in my time here has been seeing the amount of work that goes into a funeral service behind the scenes.”

During his apprenticeship, Daniel has taken a very proactive role in his learning, asking great questions and taking the lead on acquiring more skills.

We’re thrilled that he has joined our team.

Morris-Baker and The Firehouse Hold Annual Public Safety Appreciation Lunch

To thank emergency workers for their service to the community, Morris-Baker Funeral Home & Cremation Services and The Firehouse Restaurant hosted their annual Public Safety Appreciation BBQ Lunch today for employees of the Johnson City Police and Fire Departments, Washington County EMS, Sherriff’s Office, 911 Dispatch, and ETSU Public Safety.

The BBQ was prepared and served by The Firehouse, and The Firehouse and Morris-Baker team members served any and all emergency workers who showed up to get some lunch.

We’re proud to be a part of a community whose emergency workers provide such excellent support and service to Johnson City. Thank again to all of you for your hard work and dedication. And thank you to The Firehouse for partnering with us again on this annual event!

Morris-Baker will be hosting a webinar on Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) on Tuesday, June 8, from 3-5 p.m. with Dr. Sood.

SMART was developed by Dr. Amit Sood at Mayo Clinic and has been tested and found to be effective in decreasing signs of stress, anxiety, and burnout while also increasing resilience, well-being, mindfulness, happiness, and positive health behaviors.

“It’s a wonderful sport for young people to learn important life lessons,” adds Bolton.

Morris-Baker Owner Wins Statewide Award

Preston McKee was awarded the 2021 Public Citizen of the Year Award by the National Association of Social Workers, Tennessee Chapter.

The Public Citizen of the Year award recognizes an outstanding member of the community, who is not a social worker, but whose accomplishments exemplify the values and mission of the social work profession.

Preston McKee is the president and owner of Morris-Baker Funeral Home and Cremation Services. His nomination letter states that “Preston exudes the social work values of service, dignity and worth of a person and the importance of human relationships. During his time with the family business, Preston has gone above and beyond to ensure that his clientele and the community have access to grief support.”

He was also nominated because of: his efforts to support grief education for social workers and other professionals in the region; his decades of community service—from Rotary International to United Way; and his financial support of important community projects such as the Tweetsie Trail and Langston Centre.

McKee accepted the award on March 31 during the NASW’s virtual Social Work Day on the Hill. During his acceptance, McKee said, “Virtually none of the accomplishments mentioned in the nomination would have been possible without the assistance of professionals in the community who have allowed me to work alongside them.”

He thanked individual community members, professionals in the social work field, his Morris-Baker staff, his wife, and his parents “for setting the example of community service from the time I can remember.”

The Potential Problem with Stimulus Payments—and a Solution

Everyone wants their stimulus payments, right? Well, yes, but the payment could create a problem for anyone who is receiving state-funded care whose assets have to be under $2000.

If the stimulus payment bumps a person’s assets over the $2,000 threshold, it could disqualify her/him for coverage for state-funded care. When that happens, the person might have to pay full cost for their care and then have to reapply for coverage, which isn’t always an easy task.

The solution? There are approved “spend-downs” (ways to use the money that allow someone to keep the payment but not get disqualified from state care). The funds can be put into an insurance-based funeral trust that is irrevocable that will protect those assets for future funeral expenses.

The best part is we can help make this easy. Mike Richards, Continuing Care Coordinator, can me with you in person, by phone, over Zoom (in whatever manner makes you comfortable during the COVID era) and help you take this step.

Morris-Baker was a sponsor for Wreaths Across America Day, which took place at Mountain Home National Cemetery on Saturday, December 19.

The goal of the Wreaths Across America program is this: “Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.”

For the last several years, Morris-Baker has been a sponsor of this program as a way of honoring veterans and the legacy of Carson Baker, who served in World War II.

Morris-Baker Featured on WJHL: "Funeral home owner hoping staff stays healthy for expected surge"

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Preston McKee sprayed a strong scent onto the hoods of Morris-Baker Funeral Home staff Friday, making sure the N95 respirators he’d obtained for his staff fit and worked properly.

Access to the best possible personal protective equipment will be critical in keeping Morris-Baker’s owner and his small group of licensed workers healthy for what he said is a significant expected uptick in deaths as COVID-19 fatalities mount across the region.

“We have been preparing for an anticipated increase in the number of COVID deaths for awhile, and what we’ve seen is bearing out that expectation. We do expect to see a significant increase in COVID deaths.”

Recently, Morris-Baker teamed up with the Johnson City Rotary Club to support the Johnson City Professional Firefighters Association Honor Guard by matching the contributions made by the members of the Rotary club. The firefighters association is raising funds to outfit their Honor Guard so they can expand their service at civic functions and to stand in tribute for area fire firefighters who have passed away.

Shane Malone, from the Firefighters Association, accepted the donations from Morris-Baker and the Johnson City Rotary Club during a recent Rotary meeting. He also brought the Seagrave fire truck that was recently restored with the support of the community including the Johnson City Rotary Club and Morris-Baker.

Once, there was a boy. He grew up in a small village. He played the clarinet. He studied hard in school. He had friends. His parents loved him, and he went on to college and then worked in other places but eventually returned to the town of his youth. He took a job in a city an hour away, but the commute was worth it. He bought a house a few blocks from his parents. He joined the community band. He made a life for himself.

Then the pandemic hit. He was fortunate to live in a small village—fewer people could mean fewer cases, but not always. He didn’t take any chances, though, and he stayed at home for a planned vacation. He didn’t leave the house. But soon vacation was over, he returned to his job, a job in which he did not have his own office. He worked in a room with many other people, and they sat close together. He was scared but he went to work anyway. Soon, he got sick, but not very sick. Then he got sicker. Then he had to go to the hospital. He got worse but then got better. Then he got worse. Then the doctors had to break the news to his parents: he was gone.

His parents loved him.

I knew this boy. I did not know him well. But I’m from that small village, and when you come from a small town, you know everyone, somehow. I had not seen this boy-now-man in many, many years, but when I got the news, I cried, not because I missed him but because I ached for his mother—his family, too, but especially his mother.

Everyone knows someone who has lost somebody—the pandemic is not the first bearer of death. Most of us have lost someone ourselves. But when it happens to someone else, it’s hard to know what to say to those who are grieving since words can’t make the death disappear, and that’s what we really want, isn’t it? It’s what I want when I offer condolences. I want to take the pain away, but now I know better than to try, and I know not to offer platitudes. I used to give in to the “it’s easier to say nothing” attitude, not because I didn’t care, but because I worried I could not find the right words.

I sat at my desk, and I pulled out a blank card, and I wrote his mother. I did my best. I didn’t have magic words, all I had were simple words that said I was sorry, I was thinking of her, that my heart hurt for her. Were they the “right” words? I don’t know that there are any right words, but if there is one thing I have learned, it’s that kind words are better than silence.

Hugs from Home is a new service that allows those not able to attend funeral services the chance to share a token of love and support with grieving families. To participate, visit the obituary of your deceased loved one, and leave your message of support. Our staff will then attach your condolence messages to balloons and fill the room in which services are taking place. Families will then be able to read your heartfelt messages and know that many others are in attendance in spirit.

Morris-Baker and Firehouse teamed up to provide lunch to public safety workers as a way of thanking them for the hard work they do.

An annual event, this year's lunch was done a little differenty due to COVID-19. Everyone got their lunches carry out, but none of that changed the positive mood.

Public safety workers included those from Johnson City Police, Johnson City Fire Department, EMS, Washington County Sherriff's Office, 911 Dispatch Center, and the ETSU Police Force. We want to thank them all for their tireless efforts to keep our community safer and stronger.

It may seem like life has come to a grinding halt during this time of social distancing, but there are still a few aspects of life that pay no heed to current events. The death of a loved one, for instance, is an unexpected blow many folks will endure even in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak.

With that in mind, Preston McKee of Morris-Baker Funeral Home has been hard at work over a month streamlining new computer software and refining his company’s protocol in an effort to keep serving families grieving the loss of a loved one in the midst of a pandemic.

“We’ve been working on that for weeks, and we’re very fortunate these tools we’ve been developing to support families during regular times have really shown their value during this current time with the coronavirus,” McKee said.

CDC Releases Practical COVID-19 Guidance for Funeral Directors

The National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) continues to lead the conversation with federal officials about the role of funeral service as it relates to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. At the request of NFDA and as a followup to the postmortem guidance released by the CDC in late-February, today, the agency released specific information about funeral and visitation services to help funeral directors safely care for people who have died of confirmed or suspected COVID-19.

Specifically, this answers the following questions:

—Am I at risk if I go to a funeral or visitation service for someone who died of COVID-19?

—Am I at risk if I touch someone who died of COVID-19 after they have passed away?

—What do funeral home workers need to know about handling decedents who had COVID-19?

—What should I do if my family member died from COVID-19 while overseas and what are the requirements for returning the body to the U.S.?

In summary:

—You can still have a funeral or visitation.

—Bodies can be embalmed using proper PPE.

—Decedents can be buried or cremated, but check with state and local requirements.

We'll have more information up soon to help families navigate these times and special circumstances.

This week, Kibbi, our therapy dog was featured on WJHL's News Channell 11. The featured, titled, "Comfort Dogs Stepping into Area Funeral Homes." Morris-Baker has been proud ot have Kibbi as a staff member for nine years now. She received her therapy dog certification through Therapy Dogs International, and both Preston McKee, the owner of Morris-Baker, and his wife, Shuly, are certified handlers for Kibbi.
