Kathryn Garland Stokes

October 23, 1923 ~ November 23, 2006

Kathryn Garland Stokes, 83, of Atlanta, Georgia, formerly of Johnson City, died Thursday, November 23, 2006 from complications from a fall and neck injury. She was the daughter of the late Gladys Fudge and Jesse Garland of Johnson City. She was preceded in death by: a sister, Anne Garland, a son, Phillip Stokes, Jr. and a nephew, David Garland, III. Survivors include: her husband of 54 years, Phillip Stokes, Sr.; son and daughter-in-law, Thom and Cathy Stokes, of Lawrenceville, GA; beloved granddaughters, Sarah and Jenna, also of Lawrenceville, GA; brother and sister-in-law, David and Jane Garland, of Johnson City; niece and family, Sarah Garland St. Onge, of Columbia, SC; nephew, Michael Garland and family of Johnson City; Sherry Garland Spooner, of Johnson City, TN; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. She was a graduate of ETSU and the University of Tennessee. She was a former faculty member and department head at Coker College in South Carolina. Upon her marriage, she became a remarkable homemaker, loving wife, incredible mother, and wonderful grandmother. Graveside services for Kathryn Stokes will be conducted 1:00 pm Sunday in Happy Valley Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm Sunday, at which time family and friends will proceed to the cemetery for the service.
