John Robert Alvis, Sr., 89, 1612 Fairway Drive, Johnson City died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in the Appalachian Christian Village. Mr. Alvis was a native of Brush Creek, TN and had lived in Johnson City since 1962. He was a son of the late Dan Overton Alvis, Sr. and Johnnie Oakley Alvis. Mr. Alvis retired from the Tennessee Motor Co. in 1979 with thirty-eight years of service as service manager. Mr. Alvis was an Army Captain serving with the 241 Ordinance Battalion in WW II. He was awarded two Bronze Stars, one each for Normandy and the Northern France Command. He was a member of the Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. His civic memberships include: Johnson City Lodge# 486 F and A.M.; Jericho Shrine of Kingsport; Holston Council # 101 of Cryptic Masons; Johnson City Elks Lodge; a sixty year member of the John Sevier Post American Legion; member of V.F.W. Post # 2108 of Johnson City. Mr. Alvis is preceded in death by: his wife of fifty-one years, Marie Kelly Alvis in 1997; his parents ; one sister Ophelial Hall: one brother, Dan Overton Alvis, Jr. Survivors include: two daughters and a son-in-law, Sharon 'Shay' Lowe of Johnson City, Pat and Ray Kidd of Jonesborough; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bo Alvis of Gray, Bill and Sharon Alvis of Jonesborough; one sister, Kathryn Hall of Old Hickory, TN; five grandchildren, Kelly Conley, Angie Johnson, Justin Alvis, Rachel Kidd, and Leah Kidd; one great grandson, William Michael Conley, II; several nieces and nephews; two special friends, Jerry Pierce and Sue Alvis. The funeral service for John Robert Alvis, Sr. will be conducted at 8 PM Friday, June 9, 2006 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Ira Cunningham will officiate. Music will be by Jerry Pierce, soloist and Mrs. Libby Hatcher, pianist. A service of entombment will be conducted at 11 AM Saturday in the chapel mausoleum at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at the mausoleum at 10:55 AM Saturday for this service. Military honors will be accorded at the mausoleum by the V.F.W. Post # 3382 and the Tennessee National Guard of Kingsport. Honorary pallbearers will be Friends. To those who desire, the family request that memorials be made to the Washington County-Johnson City Animal Shelter, 525 Sells Avenue, Johnson City, TN 37601. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 6 to 8 PM Friday prior to the service.
