Barney Earl Miller

March 3, 1952 — June 30, 2010

Dr. Barney Earl Miller, age 58, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died peacefully at his residence on June 30, 2010. A native of Chattanooga, he lived most of his life in Tennessee, and had been a resident of Johnson City for 15 years. He was the son of Gilbert and Marcella Miller.He was a well-respected Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Anatomy and Cell Biology at Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University. He served as research director for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Miller trained in Biochemistry at the University of Tennessee, Memphis, and completed postdoctoral training at Duke University in the Departments of Biochemistry and Medicine. He spent nearly 10 years in biotechnology corporations prior to coming to E.T.S.U.Barney loved nature, dogs, children, computers, and was a beloved former scoutmaster. He will be remembered for his humility, generosity, kindness, warmth and excellent sense of humor. He had a vivid imagination and was a great storyteller. To know him was to love him if you were lucky enough to get to know him.In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife of 27 years, Dr. Merry Miller, son, Corwin Andrew Miller, daughter, Melanie Kay Miller, sister, Kay Miller Martin, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.The family of Dr. Miller will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 pm on Sunday, July 4, 2010 at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 4:00 pm. Rev. James Bennington and Rev. Bethany Douty will officiate.
