Bill G. Barnett

Mr. Bill G. Barnett, age 84, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2014, in Lakebridge Health Care Center. Mr. Barnett was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was the son of the late Louis and Mary Ruth Huffine Barnett. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict with the 424 Field Artillery Battalion, Battery C. He was the #1 gunner in a battalion that served in the '?Iron Triangle'? behind enemy lines in Korea. Mr. Barnett was a self-employed barber for 51 years, and also served several churches as a pastor from the mid 60s through 2012. He and his wife Betty were members of the Shinning Light Quartet, sharing gospel music throughout the region in the 1960s and 70s. He was a member of the Zion Church of Jesus. Survivors include his wife of sixty years, Betty E. Hawk Barnett; three sons, Stephen G. Barnett and Samuel D. Barnett, and Shannon D. Barnett; daughter, Sharon D. Barnett Smith; daughters-in-law, Naomi Barnett and Sharon Barnett, both of Johnson City; son-in-law, Bobby Smith, Elizabethton; three granddaughters, Jennifer Ruth Barnett Schlichting, Joanna Barnett, and Hannah Smith; four grandsons, Jonathan Barnett, Skyler Barnett, Joshua Smith, and Ben Smith; three great granddaughters, Kayla, Ashley, and Courtney Schlichting and one great grandson Caleb Schlichting; brother Donald E. Barnett and sister-in-law Betty Nanny Barnett; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Mr. Bill G. Barnett will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Monday, February 17, 2014, at Morris-Baker. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Jerry Stout will officiate. Sam Barnett will provide the eulogy. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 12 PM Tuesday in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons Jonathan Barnett, Joshua Smith, Skyler Barnett, Ben Smith; grandson-in-law John Schlichting and next-door neighbor that was like a son Richard Storey. Honorary pallbearers will be friend Delbert Dempsey, brother-in-laws Otis Vicars and Virgil Hall and surviving members of the 424 Field Artillery Battalion. The Boone Dam Post # 4933 and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military honors. Minister, family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home by 11:15 AM Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to all of the caregivers at Lakebridge Health Care Center for their compassion and care. They would also like to thank special friend and Lakebridge roommate Luther Stewart for being like a brother.
