Charles H. Dr. Hillman

Dr. Charles H. Hillman, age 80, of 112 Barberry Road, Johnson City, Tennessee, died Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center. The son of the late Martha Grier and Verne R Hillman, Dr. Hillman was born in Christiansburg, Virginia and grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1949 and from Duke University School of Medicine in 1953. From 1955 until 1959, Dr. Hillman served in the United States Air Force with the rank of Major as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. While living in Johnson City, Dr. Hillman was in medical practice of obstetrics and gynecology for 41years, associated with the late Drs. L.E 'Jack'? Gordon and Clarence Ruffin and with Drs. John Miller, Thomas Jernigan and Robert Dunworth. After retirement from private practice, he held the position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Quillen College of Medicine, ETSU, from 2000 until 2005. He was on the staff of Johnson City Medical Center Hospital from 1959 until 2005, was past chairman of the medical staff, past chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and past member of the Board of Directors of Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, past president and member of the Bayard Carter Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Duke University, past president of Washington, Carter and Unicoi County Medical Society and a member of the Tennessee Medical Association. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City where he served as an Elder, Deacon and was a Sunday School teacher for 41 years. He was also a member of the Hurstleigh Club and a member of the Woody-Gibson Invitational Golfers. At Virginia Tech he was a member of the Highty Tighty marching band. He is survived by his wife Bettye Bowyer Hillman, one son, James Bowyer Hillman of Johnson City, one daughter Nancy Grier Hillman of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and three grandchildren, Amanda Hillman, Josh Hillman and Noah S. Hillman, all of Johnson City; one sister, Helen Hillman Shears and her husband Bill of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, their children Charles Shears of Lubbock, Texas, Martha Smith of Jacksonville, Florida and Ian Shears of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and one sister-in-law Jimmy Doris Engel and her husband Richard of Charlottesville, Virginia. He is preceded in death by sister-in-law Hettye Bower and her husband Arnold formerly of Lake City, Florida and sister-in-law Delores Holden and her husband Charles 'Jack'? formerly of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Funeral services for Dr. Hillman will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 16, 2009, at First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City. Dr. Angus Shaw and Rev. Louis Imsande will officiate. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening. Graveside services and burial will be at Monte Vista Memorial Park following the services on Saturday. The family would like to express special thanks to the staffs of Lakebridge Health Care Center and Johnson City Medical Center for the loving care provided to Dr. Hillman during his time there. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City, the American Lung Association or the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
