Charles William Baker, 79, of 4 Fairway Lane, Johnson City, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center following an illness. He was a native of Piatt County, Illinois, son of the late, Jesse and Lucile Warmoth Baker. Mr. Baker was a retired construction supervisor for the A.E. Staley Manufacturing Company of Decatur, Illinois, after 40 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army during peacetime. Mr. Baker was a member of the Masons and Shriners in Illinois and a past president of the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Asheville, NC. He moved to Johnson City three years ago following 17 years in the Asheville, NC, area. In addition to the Kiwanis Club he attended the Groce United Methodist Church in Asheville. He attended the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Ted Baker; a grandchild; and a great grandchild. Survivors include his wife, Marilyn J. Baker, of the home; three sons: Michael F. Baker, Oakley, IL, Don W. Baker, Macon, IL, and Dennis L. Baker, of Menifee, CA; a daughter, Sharon Romero, San Bernardino, CA; four brothers, Harvey Baker, Decatur, IL, John Baker, Cerro Gordo, IL, Robert Baker, Tower Hill, IL, and Tom Baker, of Oakley, IL; six sisters, Lucile Warnhoff, Decatur, IL, Ethel Boggs, Springfield, IL, Joann Kestner, Decatur, IL, Ilene Johnston, Fox, AR, Betty Valentine, Monticello, IL, and Mary Valentine, of Bement, IL; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; also, special friends, Saundra and Dennis Gulley. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, May 1, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. under the direction of Rev. Carol Wilson and Rev. Paul Seay in the sanctuary of the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will follow the service. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to: the Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, 225 Princeton Road, Johnson City, TN 37601; or the Fellowship Center Hospitality House, 1901 Clinch Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37916.
