Clarence Eugene Dr. Goulding, Jr.

Dr. Clarence Eugene Goulding, Jr., age 73, of 1600 Crystal Springs Drive, Johnson City, Tennessee, died at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer on Saturday, June 18. The son of the late Maude Tomlinson Goulding and Dr. Clarence E. Goulding, Sr., Dr. Goulding was born in Memphis, Tennessee, but lived the majority of his life in Johnson City. Dr Goulding graduated from Science Hill High School in 1949. He attended East Tennessee State University and went to the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis where he graduated in 1954. He did his internship in Family Practice at Knoxville General Hospital and practiced in Elizabethton before going into the Navy as a Lt. Commander. After completing his active duty, Dr. Goulding did his residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He exclusively practiced anesthesia from 1959-2004 when he retired. Dr. Goulding was a Diplomate of the American Board Of Anesthesiologist and a Fellow of the American College of Anesthesiologist. He practiced at Johnson City Specialty Hospital, Johnson City Medical center and the James H. Quillen VAMC Hospital. He also served as Professor of Surgery, Director of Anesthesia Program, at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University. Dr. Goulding was a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He belonged to the Tennessee Medical Association where he served as Vice President for East Tennessee and a member of the House of Delegates for more than twenty years. He was very active in the Tennessee State Society of Anesthesiologists where he served as president in 1998-99. He was honored by his organization with the 'Distinguished Service Award' in 2002- an honor that is only given every ten years. He also belonged to the Washington, Unicoi, Johnson County Medical Association where he served as President in 1980. He was a Founding Member and President of the Tri-Cities Anesthesiologists Society and a member of the International Anesthesia Research Society. Dr. Goulding was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Metropolitan Johnson City, Tennessee since 1964. He was Kiwanian of the Year in 1966, President in1971 and 1994 and was honored by the club in 1987 with Life Membership in Kiwanis International. He was recognized by the Park and Recreation Board of Johnson City as 'The Most Outstanding Friend of Recreation' in 1986. Dr. Goulding was a member of First United Methodist Church in Johnson City. Over the years he served as Church Lay Leader, Member of the Board of Trustees and a delegate to the Annual Conference. Dr. Goulding was an avid stamp collector. He belonged to a variety of organizations in this field, including the American Philatelic Society where he was granted Life member status in 2001. He truly enjoyed history, particularly Tennessee History. He was one of the Founders of the Watauga Historical Association and a member of the Tennessee Historical Association. He contributed the chapter on the 'Postal History of Washington County' to the Washington County Historical Society?s History of Washington County, Tennessee published in 2001. Clare Goulding is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Melba Jean Leonard Goulding. He is also survived by his four children and eleven grandchildren. His children are Amelia Goulding Little and her husband, Harry. Mocksville, North Carolina; Dr. Clarence E. 'E.C.' Goulding, III and his wife, Tisa, of Johnson City; Karen Jean Goulding Durkee, and her husband, Mark, also of Johnson City; and Richard Leonard Goulding and his wife Janell, of Warren, Indiana. He is also survived by his sister Mary Amelia Goulding McClellan and several nieces and nephews and their families. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church Capitol Project, 900 Spring Street, Johnson City, TN 37604 or the Johnson City Medical Center Hospice, 101 Med Tech Pkwy., Suite 100, Johnson City, TN 37604. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Morris-Baker Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 21, at 11:00 a.m. with graveside services to follow at Monte Vista Cemetery. The pallbearers will be C.W. Ballew, Dr. John Bradshaw, Dr. Duane Budd, Dr. Avtar Dhaliwal, E.B. Dyer, Richard Eddy, Dr. Richard Smith, and Dr. Clayton Vandiver. The honorary pallbearers will be Dr. William Cone, Ed Essick, Dr. Frank Johnson, W.T. Mathes, Cameron Perry, and Frank Raevsky. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker on Monday, June 20 from 5:00-8:00 p.m
