Cooper Shelnutt

Cooper Shelnutt, 24, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away Friday, January 15th, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Cooper lived his entire life in Johnson City. He graduated from University School in 2009. He enjoyed playing soccer throughout his school years. He received a bachelors degree from East Tennessee State University in 2015. Cooper was a cook in several eateries around town, but he had recently developed a passion for land surveying with his father in the family business. He loved collecting gemstones, and making and selling jewelry. One of his favorite pastimes was hiking the Appalachian Mountains. Most of all, he loved his friends, too many to count, and his family. Cooper was proceeded in death by his grandfathers, Glenn Algo Shelnutt, and William Franklin Chapman and his aunt Jane Keith Chapman Regan. Survivors include his parents, Glenn Allen and Cornelia Chapman Shelnutt, his brother Jackson Allen Shelnutt, his grandmothers Jimmie Ann Shelnutt and Jane Schmidt Chapman Windhorn, his stepgrandfather Robert E. Windhorn, his aunt Elizabeth Ann Shelnutt, his uncle and aunt Lawson Chapman and Melanie Wright, great uncle and aunt Benny Schmidt and Gwen Schmidt, cousins Joseph Allen, Daniel Silcox, Steven Patty, and Colin Regan, and special friends that he loved very much. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Appalachian Trail Conservancy, 799 Washington Street, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425. The family of Cooper Shelnutt will receive friends from 4 to 6 PM Thursday, January 21, 2016, in the Covenant Presbyterian Church, 603 Sunset Drive, Johnson City TN 37604. A memorial service will follow at 6 PM with Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating.
