Corinne Maddox Beaver

September 13, 1911 — March 1, 2007

Corinne Maddox Beaver, age 95, of Wellington Place in Johnson City, died Thursday, March 1, 2007 at her residence. She was a native of Sulligent, Alabama, the daughter of the late Lona Hill Maddox and the late Walter Maddox. She attended Judson College and Florence State Teachers College and graduated from the University of Alabama with a BA in Education. On June 2, 1938, Corinne Maddox married Oscar Beaver, whom she had met while attending Florence State. She spent more than 30 years teaching in the public school systems of northern Alabama and eastern Tennessee as Mr. Beaver moved in his employment with TVA. Mr. and Mrs. Beaver retired in Knoxville 34 years ago then moved to Johnson City in 1998, having lived previously in Johnson City from 1956 until 1960. Residents of Johnson City still remember Mrs. Beaver as their third grade teacher at Stratton School and as a member of Central Baptist Church. Mrs. Beaver had a great love for teaching and for music, giving piano lessons, though not successfully to her sons, and singing in the church choir. While in Knoxville they attended First Baptist Church. She and her husband loved to travel and treasured their close-knit family. She was a gentile southern lady with a warm smile and an embracing friendship. Those who knew her later in life would be surprised to know that this little lady was an All-State basketball player in Alabama! She was preceded in death by her husband and by her brother Herman Maddox. She is survived by one brother, James Hill Maddox, Sulligent, Alabama; two sons, Dr. Walter Richard Beaver of Johnson City and Dr. Robert H. Beaver of Concord, North Carolina; six grandchildren, Dr. Richard Beaver of Knoxville, Dr. Anne-Corinne Beaver Mola of Johnson City, Margaret Beaver Hassenstab of New York, Alice Hanes Beaver of Hong Kong, Britten Beaver Barry of Knoxville, Brandon Beaver of Philadelphia; two great grandchildren, Jack and Ellie Beaver of Knoxville; four beloved nieces and nephews, Steven Maddox, Billy Maddox, Carol Kilgore and Elizabeth Thornley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to either The River, c/o First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, TN 37604 or to First Baptist Church, 510 West Main Street, Knoxville, TN 37902. Private family services and entombment will take place at Monte Vista Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker Funeral Home on Sunday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.
