Donald Hudson Poole Sr., 86, of 700 Hiwassee Hills Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, August 30, 2006, in the James H. Quillen Veterans Medical Center at Mountain Home, TN, after an extended illness. Dr. Poole was a native of McKeesport, PA, on September 2, 1919. He was a son of the late Jesse W. and Ruth Dines Poole. The family moved back to Parkersburg, W.VA, when he was 9 years old. He had been a resident of Johnson City since 1963. Dr. Poole was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and attended Marietta College in Marietta, OH, and received his B.A. degree from the University of Denver. He received his Master?s Degree from the Northwestern University and his Doctorate from the University of Georgia. Dr. Poole taught Geography and related subjects at the University of North Dakota, the University of Georgia and East Tennessee State University, where he retired as Chairman of the Department. He was very interested in land formations and traveled extensively throughout the United States studying them. Dr. Poole was a recipient of a National Science Foundation Grant which enabled him to study the PhD and NASA funding for his Dissertation. He is listed in Who?s Who of American Educators and Who?s Who of Executive and Professionals. His memberships include Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Zi Honorary Societies, American Association of Geographers and Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, BPOR Elks Lodge 198, and the Metropolitan Kiwanis Club, for which he served as President. Dr. Poole served in the United States Army, 6th Combat Infantry Division, during WW II. He was wounded in the Battle of Lone Tree Hill in Northern New Guinea in 1944 and remained hospitalized for two years. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, and his unit was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations. Dr. Poole is preceded in death by: his parents; three brothers, Robert E. Poole, of Columbus, OH, Ira A. Poole and William A. Poole, both of Parkersburg, W.VA; and one sister, Zara Sheperd, of Arlington, VA. Survivors include: his wife, Frankye Bland Poole, of the home; a son, Donald H. Poole Jr. and wife, Christi Miles Poole, of Los Angeles, CA; and a brother, Dean B. Poole of Parkersburg, W.VA. The funeral service for Dr. Donald H. Poole Sr. will be conducted at 11 AM Tuesday, September 5, 2006, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. John Toney and Rev. Garland Thayer, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Full Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by the V.F.W. Post 3382 of Kingsport. Active pallbearers will be nephews. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 6 to 8 PM Monday, Sept. 4, 2006.
