Earnest James Barnard, Sr

Ernest James Barnard, Sr., 827 W. Maple Street, died Saturday, August 13, 2005 at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mr. Barnard was an East Tennessee native born near Tazwell, TN, taught in a one room school house at Howard?s Quarter near Tazwell. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee. He served as Captain in the Armored Division under General George Patton. Mr. Barnard was employed by the TN Department of Public Health as a Microbiologist and retired as Director of the Johnson City Branch Laboratory after 42 years service. His private life revolved around his family especially enjoying over 50 years of vacationing at the beach with his family at Pawleys Island, SC. and he was an avid gardener. He was a son of the late John H. Barnard and Lillie M. Pearson Barnard and was also preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lillian Barnard; one sister, Loeda Shockley; two brothers, Estel Barnard and Luther Barnard and four grandchildren. Mr. Barnard was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Survivors include three daughters, Susan B. Bailey, Johnson City, Nancy B. Hensley, Nashville, TN and Janet B. Miller, Johnson City; two sons, Ernest James (Jim) Barnard, Jr., Tallahassee, FL and Barry L. Barnard, Florence, AL; three brothers, Lewis Barnard, Athens, TN, J.P. Barnard, Tazwell, TN and Fred Barnard, Tazwell, TN; one sister, Cloda Lewis, Johnson City; nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A funeral service for Mr. Barnard will be conducted at 2 PM Wednesday, August 17th 2005 from Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Johnson City. Reverend Steven Harmon will officiate. Burial with military honors, provided by Kingsport VFW Post #3382, will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jim Barnard, Barry Barnard, Michael Barnard, Adam Barnard, Robert Miller and Nate Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Hensley, Bryan Fair and Joshua Fair. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Wednesday at the church
