Ernest Hughes, 96, of 2401 Sinking Creek Road, Johnson City, died Tuesday morning at the residence of his step daughter-in-law in Johnson City. Mr. Hughes was a native of Relief, N.C., and had lived in Johnson City for most of his life. He was a son of the late Clayton and Emma Hughes. Mr. Hughes was retired Bus Driver with the Johnson City Transit Authority. He was a member of the Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. Mr. Hughes is preceded in death by his wife, Vena Hughes. Survivors include: seven daughters, Elva Sammons, of Jonesborough, Sue Walker, of Daytona Beach, FL, Mae Hylton, of Limestone, Sandy Pryor, of Elgin, S.C., Judy Foster, of Limestone, Linda Henley, of Johnson City, and Sheila Humphreys, of Limestone; three sons, Bill Hughes, of Johnson City, Gene Hughes, of Iron Station, N.C., and Dickie Hughes, of Chattanooga. Twenty three grandchildren, thirty one great grandchildren and several step children also survive. A graveside funeral service for Ernest Hughes will be conducted at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the Barnett Cemetery. Rev. Steve Bennett will officiate. Memorial gifts may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102, Johnson City, TN 37601.
