Evelyn Cowan Doak

Evelyn Cowan Doak, 91, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, August 19, 2006 in Johnson City. Mrs. Doak was born in Los Angles on April 15, 1915 and grew up in Dallas TX. Other than the years of 1941 to 1947, she resided in Shelbyville, KY from 1936 to 1966 where she met her husband of 64 years and raised their four children. Except for a brief period in Atlanta, she had lived since 1966 in Johnson City where she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was an accomplished pianist and music teacher having received her training at the Chicago Conservatory of Music. Her first teaching position was in Shelbyville at the Science Hill School for Women. She subsequently taught and mentored many of the youth of the community in musical performance at the local and state level. She was a longtime director of the choir and organist at the Shelbyville First Presbyterian Church. She served as a pianist in Johnson City at the First Presbyterian Church. In addition to being a talented pianist, she was a composer of anthems and poems. She was a devoted and loving wife and mother who will sorely be missed and long remembered. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. A.D. Doak, in 2002, her parents, John C. and Anne H. Cowan and brothers, James, Howard and Thomas. Survivors include; one sister, Ruth Tatum of Westwood, Massachusetts; sons, Thomas and John Hunt; daughters, Day Ann (Emory) and Ruth Elizabeth (Drummond); eight grandchildren and nine Great Great Grandchildren. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Mrs. Karen Nelson of Gray whose devotion and care during the last years were immeasurable assistance to the family and a source of great comfort and support to both Dr. and Mrs. Doak. A memorial service will be held at Appalachian Christian Village, Tuesday, August 22, 2006 at 4:00 PM. A memorial service and burial will be scheduled for a future date in Shelbyville, KY. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be given to the First Presbyterian Church, 105 S. Boone Street, Johnson City, TN 37601.
