Fred Miller

Fred 'Pa-Fred'? Milller, 95, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at the Center on Aging and Health in Erwin. He was a native of Washington County and a son of the late Oscar and Annie Mae Cowell Miller. He was also preceded in death by six brothers, Luther, Jessee, Robert, James, Marion and Norman Miller. Mr. Miller was the oldest member of the Apostolic Christian Church in Johnson City. He had played the harmonica with several local gospel groups and recorded on many albums for other groups. He was interviewed by Tim Cable on Cable Country about his harmonica playing and was nicknamed the ' Harmonica Man'?. His most requested song was 'Amazing Grace'?. Mr. Miller had retired from B. G. Young and sons. He was instrumental in building State Routes in VA, TN, and NC and the beginning of the Interstates. He had helped in the construction of the John Exum Parkway. He had worked in copper mines in Stoney Creek and mined coal in Montery, TN. Survivors include ; his wife of 72 years, Mary Permelia McQueen Miller; two daughters, Shirley Davis and her husband Edward of Johnson City and Lou Ellen Miller and her husband Gary of Jonesborough; two sisters, Myrtle Cavin and Mary Eva Birchfield both of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Kenneth Davis and his wife Michelle, Lori Wise and her husband Paul, Stacey Bishop and her husband Matt and Robin Boyd and her husband Chris; six great grandchildren, Jordan, Mikaela, Lauren, Brooklynn, Kara and Tyler. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the Apostolic Christian Church in Johnson City. Rev. Edward Davis will officiate. Burial services will be conducted at 1:00 pm Saturday from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. A procession will leave the funeral home at 12:45 pm on Saturday for the cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 until 7:00n pm on Friday.
