George W. Shook, 89, of 431 W. Poplar Street, Johnson City,TN died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at his residence. He was a great lover of his God, his country and his family. To them he gave faithful service. Mr. Shook was a native of Watauga County, North Carolina and had lived in Johnson City since 1961 . He was a son of the late Virgil Crestus and Faye Norris Shook. Mr. Shook was retired from the Supply Department at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home, TN. He was a member of the Downtown Christian Church. Mr. Shook was an Army veteran of World War II serving in Pattons Army in the European Theatre. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his heroic service. Mr. Shook is preceded in death by: his parents; a grandson, George Walter Shook; and by three brothers, Charles Shook, Lance Shook, and Max Shook. Survivors include: his wife, Edna Heaton Shook of the home; two daughters, Kathryn and her husband Carl Young of Johnson City, Patrice Shook of Nome, Alaska; one brother, Paul Dean Shook of Elizabethton,TN; two sisters, Mary Lou Guy of Beech Mountain, NC and Clara Sue Jones of Hickory, NC; three grandchildren, Ann Katherine Richards and husband Brandon of Keller, TX, Mary Ellen Leach and her husband Michael of Kingsport, and Carl R. Young, III of Knoxville; three great grandchildren, Jane Elizabeth Richards , Jewel Grace Richards and Eden Noel Richards; several nieces and nephews also survive. A Private Family Memorial for George W. Shook will be conducted at a later date.
