Gladys E. Smith, 84, a former resident of Appalachian Christian Village, Johnson City, died Sunday, August 21, 2005 at the nursing home of the James H. Quillen V. A. Medical Center. Miss Smith was born the fifth child of the late Ed and Laura Smith on May 9, 1921 in Fowler, California. When the Smith family returned to the family farm at Poplar Ridge, near Piney Flats, Gladys attended the Poplar Ridge School and graduated from Mary Hughes High School. She was an employee of the Holston Ordinance Company before enlisting in the U. S. Navy during WWII. After the war, she graduated from Youngstown College with a B.A. in Social Science. She was employed in the Social Services Department of the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for a number of years and later as a medical secretary in Craftony, PA. Gladys was a member of the Poplar Ridge Christian Church. In addition to her parents, two brothers, Ernest and Laverne Smith, preceded her in death. Survivors include: two brothers, Herman E. Smith, Piney Flats, and James E. Smith, Jr., Johnson City; four sisters, Beulah Baird, Gray, Dorothy Crosswhite, Kingsport, Louise High, Louisville, KY and Alice Young, Huntsville, AL; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, August 23, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. in the North Chapel of Morris-Baker Funeral Home, under the direction of Mr. Roland Whittemore. A committal service will follow in the Poplar Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 10:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Memorials may be to the Appalachian Christian Village, Building Fund, 2012 Sherwood Drive, Johnson City, TN 37601.
