Grace Brown Miller

Grace Brown Miller, 92, 102 Avonlea Place, Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 at her residence following a brief illness. Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Nellie Pierce Brown. Her parents were the founders of Brown Milling Company. She is preceded in death by:her husband, Beryl Miller ; three brothers , J.A. Brown, J. Fred Brown and Charles 'Jug' Brown. Mrs. Miller was a graduate of Science Hill High School and Johnson City Business College. She worked as a bookkeeper for Brown Milling Company and later was Co-owner of Nellie Grace Fashions. She taught ceramics for twenty -five years. Mrs. Miller was an avid quilter and gardner. She was a member of the North Johnson City Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class. She also volunteered at the Johnson City Medical Center for the Holston Baptist Association in the ICU waiting room. Survivors include :one daughter and son-in-law, June and Edward J. Gouge of Johnson City ;two sons and daughters-in-law, Billy J. and Nancy Miller of Lafayette, LA and Thomas and Mary Jane Miller of New Haven .IN; five grandchildren, Michael Miller of Houston, TX, Scott Miller and wife Angie of Fairbanks, AL, Molly Miller of Fort Wayne, IN, Poppy Miller of New Haven, IN, and Elinor'Ellie' Mair of Johnson City; one step granddaughter, Beth Gouge of Elizabethton; one step great grandson, Austin Fair of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Barbara H. Brown of Arusia, Tanzania,Africa. Several nieces ,nephews and cousins also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Grace Brown Miller will be conducted at 3 PM Saturday, October 8, 2005 in the North Johnson City Baptist Church. Rev. Wiley I. Rutledge and Dr. David Guinn will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 to 3 PM Saturday prior to the service. The committal service will follow at the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Michael Miller, Scott Miller, Edward J. Gouge, Paul Brown, David Brown and Edward Bowman. Honorary pallbearers will be the Ladies of the Ruth Sunday School Class, Bill Wilson, Delmas Dugger, Richard Powell, Dana Malone, John Darr, Karl Darr,Jim Brant, Jim and Helen Bowman. The family wish to express their heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers of Mrs. Miller, Mary Dugger, Elaine Rose and the Aventa Hospice. The family request that in lieu of flowers that memorials be sent to North Johnson City Baptist Church, Building Fund, 305 Ferndale Road, Johnson City, TN 37604 or the Community Help Center, 1591 Hwy 81N, Jonesborough, TN 37659.
