Harvey Ray Oxendine

October 16, 1921 — July 30, 2006

Harvey R. Oxendine, 84, 589 Old Embreeville Road, Jonesborough, TN died Sunday, July 30 ,2006 at his residence. Mr. Oxendine was a native of Roan Mountain and had lived in Jonesborough since 1962.He was a son of the late George Washington Oxendine and Eva Jane Morgan Oxendine. Mr. Oxendine is preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children, Grace Lillian Stewart Oxendine in 1978 and one sister, Glynia Bowling. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Oxendine resided in Johnson City and later in Jonesborough. He coached in the Johnson City Little League Baseball Program. He coached the 1961 National League All-Stars to a 2nd Place finish in the Tennessee State Championship game. He was employed for thirty-eight years with United Intermountain Telephone Company as PBX Supervisor. After moving to Jonesborough he became a member at First Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. Harvey was a wonderful husband and father who enjoyed farming his land, reading and playing games with his family including golf. Memories of Harvey will be cherished forever. The family would like thank the many friends who were so caring during this difficult time. Survivors include: his wife Betty Addington Oxendine of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Leland 'Bucky' and Carol Oxendine of Kingsport, Harvey Wayne 'Bud' and Connie Oxendine of Stafford, VA, Thomas Ralph 'Tommy' and Shirley Oxendine of Fort Worth, TX; one daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Jean and Miller McElveen of Florence, SC; two step-sons and wives, Steve and Ellen McConnell of Gainesville, GA, Doug and Helen McConnell of Houston, TX; one brother, James 'Jim' Oxendine of Johnson City; five sisters, Lonnie Hill of Hampton, Geneva Odom of Elizabethton, Rosa Lee Stevens of Hampton, Patsy Hudgins of Morganton, NC and Joan Hill of Elizabethton; seven grandchildren, Chip, Scott, Casey, Mary Beth, Alina, David and Jessica; seven step grandchildren; three great grandchildren, Chloe, Eric and Emily; several special nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Harvey R. Oxendine will be conducted at 8 PM Wednesday, August 2, 2006 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Joel Cook and Chaplain David Tydings will officiate. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at the funeral chapel at 10:30 AM Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Thomas 'Chip' Oxendine, Scott Oxendine, Casey Oxendine, David McElveen, Jimmy Oxendine, Glen Brown, Steve McConnell and Doug McConnell. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult Men?s Sunday School Class of the First Baptist Church of Jonesborough. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday prior to the service. To those who desire, memorials may be made to the Youth Department, First Baptist Church, 201 E.
