Henry Clay Pope

November 25, 1919 — December 6, 2014

Henry Clay Pope, Jr., 95, Johnson City, passed away the evening of Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the home of Glad and David Lounder. Henry was a Burnsville, NC native. He was the son of the late Henry Clay Pope, Sr. and Verna Wheeler Pope. Henry was a World War II veteran, having served as an aviator in the US Navy. His service took him many places, including Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Louisiana, New Guinea, Saipan, Guam, and Palau. He also served aboard the USS Yorktown and other ships. Henry was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to the Elizabethton Masonic Lodge. Henry worked for 30 years as an ironworker. He was also a business agent for the ironworker union in Knoxville. He retired from TVA as a superintendent of ironworkers at Phipps Bend Nuclear Power Plant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Mae Ledford Pope; daughter, Annie Layton Pope; and grandchildren, Emily Robins and Michael McAllister. Survivors include: four children, Gussie Wynegar and her husband Fred, of Johnson City, Peggy Robins and her husband Walt, of Tampa, FL, Susie Tice and her husband Ed, of Montana, and Ronnie Pope, of Bristol, TN; six grandchildren, Summer, Brian, John, Thad, Audrey, and Sarah; and eight great grandchildren. Special thank you to Dr. Keith Cook, nurse Alisha, Mountain States Hospice, EMS, and all others who had a hand in Henrys care. Very special thank you to Glad and David Lounder for their loving care, patience, and guidance far beyond what words can express. The family of Henry C. Pope, Jr. will receive friends from 4 pm until 6 pm Thursday, December 11, 2014 in the Morris-Baker Oak Chapel. The funeral service will follow in the chapel at 6 pm Thursday. Pastor Curtis Hurt will officiate. The committal service is scheduled for 11 am Friday, December 12, 2014 in Roselawn Memory Gardens. The Boone Dam VFW Post 4933 will accord military honors. Minister, family, and friends are requested to meet at Morris-Baker by 10:15 am Friday to go in procession to the cemetery.
