Howard D Crum

Howard Dale Crum, 83 of 167 Snyder Rd, Gray departed this life August 7, 2007 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was a native of Greene County the oldest son of Herman D. and Kate Crum. He lived most of his life in Johnson City and Washington County. He graduated from Science Hill High School. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Daisy Luster and Chrystal Ford. He is survived his wife Ruth Crum. Brothers Dallas Crum & wife Shirley of Gray and Dewey Crum & his wife Gladell of Kingsport, three children; David Crum of Johnson City, Tom Crum and his wife Erma of Jonesborough, and Susan VanWingerden and husband Dave of Sherrills Ford, NC and Lois Crum mother of his children. Four Stepchildren Joseph Alison of Indiana, Dan Alison of Charlotte, NC, Debbie Brown of Charlotte, NC and Polly Campbell of Jonesborough. Three grandchildren Scott Crum of Greenville, Connie Mullins of Piney, and Bronson VanWingerden of Sherrills Ford, NC. Two great grandchildren Keirsten and Nicholas Mullins of Piney, 5 step-grandchildren and 4 step-greatgrandchildren. As a boy, he started with his father repairing automobiles and developed his own repair shop, which he operated for several years. He then decided to go to Appalachian Flying Service to learn aircraft mechanics. Eastman asked him to join them as they established their own flight services. He received the Tennessee state award as Aviation mechanic of the year in 1970. He retired as the Director of Aviation for Eastman. After retirement, Howard enjoyed using his mechanical abilities to help his beloved neighbors. He was one of the charter supporters and attended the Midway Presbyterian Church, Johnson City. He was a longtime member of the East Tennessee Model A restorers club and owned a 1932 DeSoto. He enjoyed sharing the joy of riding in his 1932 DeSoto, including the Colonial Hill Health Care Residents. The family will receive friends 5-7 pm Thursday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with the service to follow at 7 pm. Graveside services will be held at 10 am Friday at Monte Vista Memorial Park, family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 9:30 am and proceed to the cemetery. Close friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
