James William Jim Barker

July 12, 1942 — April 15, 2005

James William 'Jim' Barker, age 62, 377 Douglas Chapel Rd. Jonesborough, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 15, 2005 after a long, courageous battle with cancer and with his family by his side. Mr. Barker was born in Pocahontas, West Virginia on July 12, 1942. He came to Tennessee at the age of 15 and went to work at Wright?s Supermarkets. He later owned and operated B & J Heating and Air. He was a member of Princeton Freewill Baptist Church, where he held the position of deacon. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Dolly Burton Barker and a great-grandson Preston Arnold Rice. Mr. Barker was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend and he will always hold a special place in the hearts of all who knew him. Mr. Barker loved God and his family. He also loved riding go-carts and going to the beach and family gatherings. Mr. Barker loved his grandchildren and was always involved in their activities. He left behind his loving wife Beulah Barker of 43 years; four daughters and son-in-laws, Lisa and Mike Gamble, Tina and Keith Rice, Tammy and Bob Harvey and Kim and Curtis Ponder; a sister and brother-in-law; June and Tim Crowder; three brothers and sister-in-laws; Jack and Erma Barker, Jerry and Jewel Barker, Johnny and Carol Barker; one special mother-in-law Pauline Buchanan; nine grandchildren, Michael Gamble, Alysha Gamble, Mark Rice and his wife Astin, Amy Rice, Kelly Harvey, Kelsey Harvey, Dalton Ponder, Luke Ponder and Hannah Ponder; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Rice and Faith Ann Rice. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. James William 'Jim' Barker will be conducted at 8 PM Sunday, April 17, 2005 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Bill Ponder and Rev. Burl Sluder will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Sunday prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Monday in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Son-in-laws Mike Gamble, Keith Rice, Bob Harvey, Curtis Ponder; grandsons Mark Rice and Michael Gamble; brother-in-law John Buchanan, and nephew Joe K. Reid will all serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Humphreys, Ron Stewart, and Mr. Barkers brothers. Friends and family are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 AM to travel in procession to the cemetery.
