Joel Thomas Conner

August 3, 1932 — May 16, 2022

Joel Thomas Conner, 89, of Piney Flats, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2022, while in the care of The Waters of Bristol.

He was born in Johnson City, a son of the late Henry Clay Conner and Fannie Maude Armistead Conner.

Joel served his country in the United States Air Force (USAF) for 20 years before retiring in 1973, with the rank of Master Sergeant. Joel started his military career in the Navy and served 4 years before joining the USAF. The military life afforded Joel and his family a wonderful experience to travel and live in various places including international assignments.

Afterward, he would work for another 20 years at the Sprint Corporation (previously United Telephone Company), earning the title of Product Manager before retiring. While with Sprint, Joel returned to school where he received both his Bachelor of Science and Associates of Science in Business Administration from Steed College in Johnson City.

He was a Christian of the Methodist Faith, attending service at Piney Flats UMC. Joel loved his church and was active in the choir and on various committees. He was also known as “leafy tea” when he portrayed the part of a tree during summer bible school.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by infant brother, Franklin Conner, and other siblings, Hilda Ford, Henry Clay Conner, Wanda Hawkins, Jennie Whaley, Hughlon Conner, and David Conner.

Those surviving include his wife of 64 years, Joann Torbett Conner; children, Donna Kelly and husband Michael, Teresa Carter and husband Jeff; grandchildren, Justin and wife Victoria, Garrett and wife Anna, Grace, and Trevor; as well as several more nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Joel will be remembered for his friendly and positive outlook and a humor that would light up your day. And to the family, he was the best husband, father, and grandfather.

We would like to give a special thanks to the home health care services provided by Mountain Home in Johnson City, the nurses, and staff of The Waters of Bristol and Amedisys, and to family and friends who visited, called, and prayed for comfort and peace.
