John Allen Gurley

August 26, 1950 — March 4, 2010

John Gurley, 59, Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 04, 2010 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family and friends. A Johnson City native, he was a son of the late Ed and Mary Gurley. He was a member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church.A graduate of Science Hill High School, he was also a former US Marine Corps reservist. Mr. Gurley had been employed at Borla Industries and had been with them through all of their name changes since they had done business as Texas Instruments. He was known as a great sportsman and particularly enjoyed a lifelong love of softball. He had won many softball awards both locally and nationally. He was an avid golfer.In addition to his parents, Mr. Gurley was preceded in death by a son, Donald Inabinett. On his birthday in 1980, he married his best friend, Dee Gurley, and they had been happily married ever since then. In addition to his wife he is survived by four children, Kim Burleson, Elizabethton, Tina Leach, Jonesborough, Michael Inabinett, Kingsport, and Donna Sue Humphrey, Johnson City; five grandchildren, Dusty Fleenor, Gray, Sherri Whetsell, Telford, Josh Ellis, Elizabethton, Aaron Humphrey, Jonesborough, and Jamie Inabinett, Johnson City; six great grandchildren, Ethan, Cameron, Abby, Madison, Malachi, and Tala; a sister, Judy Vanadore, Taylor, NC; a niece, Crystal, a nephew Bill; and a host of friends and colleagues also survive. A memorial service for John Gurley will be held at Morris-Baker South Chapel on Saturday, March 6,2010. Pastor Curtis Hurt will officiate. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Gurleys honor to the Carver Recreation Center, c/o Herb Greenlee, City of JC Parks & Recreation, Winged Deer Park, 4137 Bristol Highway, Johnson City, TN 37601.
