John Druid Hammitt, Sr., 80, 709 E. Locust Street, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mr. Hammitt was a native of Embreeville, TN and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was a son of the late George and Martha Hammitt and was also preceded in death by one brother, Roy Hammitt. Mr. Hammitt was a WWII US Navy veteran. He was retired from Gordon?s Furniture Inc. Mr. Hammitt was a member of Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. He was survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary A. Hammitt; two sons, John D. Hammitt, Jr., Johnson City and Joseph Hammitt, Jonesborough; one daughter, Rose Stratton, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Alice Fuller, Johnson City, Bobbie Jo Hammitt and Heather Hammitt both of Jonesborough and Matthew George Hammitt, Unicoi; three great grandchildren, Tyler Brown Evan Brown and Aaron George all of Jonesborough; a god given grandchildren, Charles Lackey and Candice Lackey and a half sister, Lexie Wyatt, Alabama. A funeral service for Mr. Hammitt will be conducted at 8 PM Saturday, May 13, 2006 from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Reverend D.C. Byrd will officiate. Military graveside services will be held at 1 PM Sunday, May 14, 2006 at Washington County Memory Gardens. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 12:30 PM and travel in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Milhorn, David Milhorn, Charles Jones, Charlie Jones, John Barry and Dwight Fair. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like to express a special thank you to Veteran Affairs Medical Center LPN Ronna Boggs for her excellent care of Mr. Hammitt.
