John Young, Sr.

John LeRoy Young, Sr., 89, 1606 East Oakland Avenue, died Monday, July 10, 2006 in Johnson City, TN. Mr. Young was a native of Carter County. He grew up in the Dry Creek Community and lived in Roan Mountain from 1942 until 1980. He was a son of the late George and Lottie Brummit Young. Mr. Young was a 1938 graduate of the University of Tennessee. He was retired from the Carter County School System, having taught Vocational Agriculture at Cloudland High School for 40 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain. In addition to his parents, Mr. Young was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Mrs. Lelia Tilley Young in August 2002 and three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two sons John L. Young Jr. and wife Robin, of Johnson City and Kendred A. Young and wife Frederica, of Bluff City; two granddaughters Karen Lunsford and Teresa Frazier, both of Johnson City; two grandsons, J. Scott Young, Raleigh, N.C. and Zachary J. Young, Johnson City; and four great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 PM Thursday from the Monte Vista Burial Park. Rev. Kenneth Grindstaff will officiate. Family and friends are asked to meet at Morris-Baker by 12:40 PM Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery for the services. Active pallbearers will be Scott Young, Zachary Young, Johnathon Frazier, Keith Lunsford, Mike Hampton, Darrell Marlow, Jeff Marlow and Mark Story. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Edwards, Bryan Burleson, Wayne Holtsclaw, Jay Grindstaff, Jacqueline Pierce and Georgia Cunningham. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday.
