Kathryn Cox

Kathryn Smith Cox, 96, of Johnson City, passed away December 31, 2011 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late Stanton Pierce and Fannie Rhea Linville Smith. Kathryn was an avid golfer and bridge player. For many years she was a volunteer at the Johnson City Memorial Hospital , The Asbury Nursing Home and The Dawn of Hope. She was a supporter of Girls, Inc., Grandfather Home, Coalition for Kids, the Salvation Army, the Washington County Animal Shelter and the University of Tennessee. Kathryn was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City and the Johnson City Country Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Richard L. Cox and brothers, Tom, Stanley and Elmore Smith; sisters, Ruth Cox and Virginia Lang. Kathryn and her husband owned and operated several businesses in Johnson City including The Chocolate Bar, The Sevier Shop, The Gables, The Beverage Shop, The Alpine Package Store and Cox Enterprises. Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin Patrick and Natalie Sizemore Bailey of Johnson City, step-daughter and son-in-law, Beverly Cox and Jessie James McKinney of Forrest City, NC and step-son Lt. Col. Richard L. Cox, U. S. Army Retired and wife, Anna Barber Cox of Tampa, FL; grandchildren Lisa Bailey Green and husband, James Franklin Green and Van Bailey Walker and her husband, Howard Anthony Walker all of Johnson City; Morgan McKinney and wife, Margaret, and Kathryn McKinney McGown and husband Terry of Forrest City, NC; grandchildren, Jane Cox Lord, Karen Cox Jarock and Richard Cox, IV all of Florida; she was especially close to her great grandchildren; Taylor, Bailey and Natalie Green and Gigi Walker of Johnson City; numerous great grandchilden, great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. A funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. in the South Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Rev. Louis Imsande. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until time of service at 8:00 p.m. A committal service will be conducted on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be: Jim Green, Howard Walker, Taylor Green, Bailey Green, Morgan Cox, Orgel Dixon and Eric Smith. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to: The First Presbyterian Church, 105 S. Boone St., Johnson City, TN 37604.
