Kenneth Herbert Shug Garland

Mr. Kenneth ?Shug' Herbert Garland, 86, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center. Kenneth was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was the son of the late Walter and Nerva Garland. Kenneth proudly served his country in the United States Air Force until 1958. He later began employment at Pepsi Cola where he worked for 38 years before retiring. After he retired, his favorite past time was playing golf every week. He was well known and loved by many friends he golfed with. One of his favorite moments was his Ace hole-in-one at Pine Oaks Golf Course at Hole #2 on November 23, 2001. Kenneth was a member of the Berea Free Will Baptist Church. He served as trustee and spent many hours volunteering for their food pantry which served the community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Richard Garland and Earnest Garland, and sisters, Helen Price and Evelyn Stinson. Survivors include the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Betty Rose Head Garland; two daughters, Pam Garland and Lori Garland; four grandchildren, John Foister and his wife Candie, Andy Foister and his wife Amber, Justin Saults, and Travis Saults and his wife Holly; six great grandchildren, Brandy Foister, Brenley Foister, Mason Foister, Aubrey Foister, Katelyn Foister, and Cameron Foister; brothers, Stanley Garland, Earl Garland, Jimmy Garland, and Robert Garland; sister, Sandra Higgins; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Kenneth ?Shug' Garland will receive friends from 5 pm to 7 pm Saturday, January 14, 2017 in the Morris-Baker Dogwood Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 7 pm Saturday under the direction of Rev. Jerry Stout. A committal service is scheduled for 2 pm Sunday, January 15, 2017 at Washington County Memory Gardens. Minister, family, and friends are requested to meet at Morris-Baker by 1:15 pm Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends to carry a real life hero to his final resting place.
