Mariel Oster Brawner Cathey

Mariel Oster Brawner Cathey, 87, Johnson City, passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. Mrs. Cathey was born in Birmingham, AL to the late John and Lelia Sanders Brawner. She graduated the University of Alabama, where she was an Alpha Chi Omega member, and remained an avid fan. Following graduation, Mrs. Cathey worked for Eastern Airlines. After raising a family, she was a testing proctor at ETSU, and she also spent many years on press row with her husband, John, who was a sports information director for ETSU for 25 years. Above all, she was a devoted wife, loving mother, and proud nana to her three grandchildren. She loved to paint, draw and anything that was arts and crafts; but her passion was sports. She was a member of the Women?s Faculty Club at ETSU. Mrs. Cathey was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City. In addition to her parents, Mariel was preceded in death by: her husband of 45 years, John Edward Cathey, Sr.; and two sisters, Jacqulyn and Emily Brawner. Survivors include: eldest daughter, Leigh Cathey Galloway; one son, John Edward ?Ward' Cathey, Jr; and youngest daughter, Shannon Cathey Greene and her husband Joe; one granddaughter, Brittany Noelle Galloway; and two grandsons, John Edward Cathey III and Joseph Edward Greene. The family of Mariel Cathey will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Morris-Baker. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM. Pallbearers will be: Joe Greene, John Cathey, Joseph Greene, David Robinson, Ward Cathey and Hugh S. ?Bub' Greene. Van Mominee is an honorary pallbearer. Graveside services will immediately follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Susan G. Komen Tri-Cities, 301 Louis St., #304, Kingsport, TN 37660.
