Martha Alice Schick Marty Vandiver

November 27, 1925 — January 4, 2014

Martha Alice Schick Vandiver (Marty) passed peacefully Saturday, January 4, 2014. Her husband Dr. Clayton Vandiver preceded her in death. Martha was born November 27,1925 in Bethlehem, PA to Robert and Adelaide Schick. She graduated salutatorian in 1943 from Liberty High School Bethlehem, PA. In 1946 she graduated with honors from the University of Pa. School of Nursing. It was there she met her life mate Clayton, who was attending medical school at the university of Pa. After several moves and several children she and Clayton made Johnson City their home in 1957. Over the years Martha was very involved in the local historical society, Garden Club, Girl Scouts, PTA and Bridge Clubs. She was a homebound teacher and remained active in nursing for many years. She and Clayton traveled extensively, always including their passion for nature and fishing. They spent many winters in southwest Florida enjoying the beauty and abundance of the Everglades. She was also very active in the continuing education programs at ETSU. Martha is survived by her children, Clayton Vandiver of JC, TN, Gay Begley, Knoxville, TN, Dr.Scott Vandiver, Boone, NC, Laura Marshall, Camden, SC. Grandchildren Dr. Scott Vandiver, Steven Vandiver, Scott Begley, Juli Wilkerson, Susan Vandiver, Alice Vandiver, Jennifer Marshall and Thomas Marshall. Great grandchildren Taylor and Kyla Begley and Lea Matz Our family is eternally grateful to Lisa, Denise, Kayla, Courtney, Vicky, Sandy, Brittany, Morgan, and Jeannie, for their dedication, loving care, and countless nights playing Marthas favorite card game Skipbo. She will forever be the Skipbo queen. Martha and Clayton leave a legacy of close family, love of nature, and continued yearning for knowledge. The family of Martha Alice Schick Vandiver will receive friends from 12 to 1 PM Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in the Chapel at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow in the Sanctuary at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church at 1 PM. Rev. Michael Lester will officiate. The graveside committal service will follow in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be sent to www.drswithoutborders.org, or Tipton Haynes historic society.
