Martha Carter Booker

May 9, 1935 — September 19, 2018

Martha Ann Carter Booker, public school teacher and community volunteer, died Wednesday, September 19, 2018, after an illness and hospitalization at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was 83. Ann Booker, originally from Whitesburg, Tennessee, graduated from ETSU with a teaching degree. She taught in the Sullivan County system for 31 years, at Miller Perry Elementary School. She was an esteemed colleague and caring and committed educator. Mrs. Booker also used her professional experience outside of her classroom as she participated in adult literacy education. In her retirement, Ann became active in the Johnson City community. She volunteered with both the Johnson City and Jonesborough Senior Centers, the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts at ETSU, and the Washington County Election Commission. She valued these opportunities and cherished the friendships she made. Mrs. Booker loved learning and led an active life in her retirement. She became involved in clowning and learned to play the dulcimer. She continued her life-long education through travel and continuing education courses at ETSU. An avid walker, Ann participated in race walks as well as daily walks in her neighborhood with friends. Her two most important commitments were to her faith and her family. Mrs. Booker was a fifty-five-year member of East Unaka Christian Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher, participated in adult education, and contributed to the life of the church through hospitality and benevolence committees, fundraising opportunities and community outreach. A strong faith in Jesus Christ was her chief motivation to serve others, mostly in small acts of love, kindness, and generosity. Mrs. Booker is survived by her husband of 56 years, Bill, her daughter Elizabeth A. Johnson, a resident of Rockwell, North Carolina, and her son and daughter-in-law William C. and Suzanne K. Booker, residents of Indianapolis, Indiana. She has six grandchildren: Ashley Morton and husband Forrest, Corydon and Laura Johnson and Kate, Molly, and Jack Booker. Ann served her family with a self-sacrificing love and concern. Each of her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and they carry memories of her devotion to and support of them. They also remember making cookies with ?Grann' and eating their favorite dishes from her kitchen. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family via www.morrisbaker.com.
