Martin J. 'Jerry' Mettetal, 79, of 1010 Nottingham Place, Johnson City, died on Wednesday, April 6, 2005, at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Johnson City, he was the son of the late Ray A. and Gwendolyn Wallace Mettetal. Mr. Mettetal had served in the US Army Infantry during World War II as a staff sergeant. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from ETSU, where he was a member of Kappa Delta Pi. He also completed graduate work in chemistry at UT. Mr. Mettetal was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company and Eastman Chemical Products for 36 years, during which time he served as Director of Advertising in New York City for ten years, returning to Kingsport as Director of Marketing for the Health and Nutrition Division, and later serving as Assistant to the President of ECPI before retiring in 1986. In recent years he has been an antiques dealer. Mr. Mettetal was a former member of the American Chemical Society, the Association of National Advertisers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a former member of the Jaycees, the Toastmasters Club, Kingsport?s Optimist Club and a board member of Kingsport?s Boys and Girls Club. He was a avid golfer at the Johnson City Country Club, Ridgefields Country Club and with the Seniors Golf League. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Ray W. Mettetal; two sisters, Helen Allison and Betty Cloud; an infant son, Martin J. Mettetal Jr.; and an infant daughter, Judith Carol Mettetal. Surviving are his wife, Marguerite Long Mettetal, Johnson City; daughter, Gwendolyn Wallace Mettetal and husband, Dave Vollrath. of Mishawaka, IN; son, Jerome Thomas Mettetal Sr. and wife, Ann, of Piney Flats; son, David Scott Mettetal Sr. and wife, Dinah, of Johnstown, PA; Six grandchildren, Alison and Andrea Vollrath, Jerome 'Jay' and Sarah Mettetal, and David Scott Mettetal Jr. and Aaron Mettetal; a sister, Virginia Wells, of Knoxville, TN; a brother, Bobby Mettetal, of Odenville, AL; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Mr. Martin J. 'Jerry' Mettetal will be conducted at 3 PM Sunday, April 10, 2005, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Brian Taylor will officiate. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 to 3 PM Sunday prior to the service. Active pallbearers will be Paul Ellis, Art Hyde Jr., Herbert Matherly, Ray Mettetal Jr., Jim Roach, George 'Bill' Smith, Janet Stastny, Lee Wallace, Jim Long and Carl McInturff. Honorary pallbearers will be R.L. 'Bramlet' Beard, Jerry Dahill, Ben Hall, Phil Hubble, Ralph Hudson, E.W. 'Bill' King, John L. 'Jack' Phillips and William Rumgay.
