Mary Ava Devault

January 30, 1904 — October 2, 2005

Mary Ava DeVault, 101, formerly of 102 Wilmary Road, died Sunday, October 2, 2005 at the Unicoi County Long Term Care Center. She was a native of Washington County, daughter of the late Joseph Archer and Frances Dyer Snyder and had lived most of her life here. Mrs. DeVault was a graduate of East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee. She had attended Penn State University, working toward a doctorate degree. Mrs. DeVault had taught school for 17 years in the Carter and Washington County school systems, Radford College and East Tennessee State University. She also was a member of the American Association of University Women and the ETSU Golden Fifties. She was the owner and operator of the Wilmary Gift Shop, which she opened in 1954. Mrs. DeVault was a member of the Poplar Ridge Christian Church, Piney Flats. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband William Weldon DeVault in 1999, one son and a brother, Joseph C. Snyder; three sisters, Dessie Rumbley, Estelle Snyder and Beulah Snyder Rose. Survivors include: a nephew, Joe C. Snyder, Jr., Erwin; four nieces, Jane Snyder, Mary C. Austin both of Johnson City, Evelyn Carpenter and Margaret Price both of Nashville. A graveside service is scheduled for Wednesday, October 5, 2005 in the Monte Vista Memorial Park at 3:30 p.m. under the direction of Mr. Roland Whittemore. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m until 3:00 p.m. Those assembled will go in procession to the cemetery for the service there. Honorary pallbearers will be: Jim Snyder, Bill Snyder, Hayword Sell and Jim Brant. Memorials may be made in the form of contributions to: the Poplar Ridge Christian Church, 206 Poplar Ridge Church Road, Piney Flats, TN 37686.
