Mary Beard Martin, 601 Mountain View Circle, Johnson City, died Thursday, April 10, 2008, at the Appalachian Christian Village. Mrs. Martin was a native and life long resident of the Johnson City area. She was a daughter of the late Hobart McKinley and Sue Brown Beard. She was a member of First Christian Church, where she was a founding member of the Mr. & Mrs. Sunday school class. Mrs. Martin earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from ETSU. She earned her degree while working full time at Eastman Kodak '' participating in ETSUs first program offering night classes for the chemistry degree. She retired from Eastman after 42 ½ years of service to the company as a research chemist. She was a member of the Monday Club, and she was passionate about her pastimes of interior decorating, gardening, and floral design. She was also a talented seamstress. Survivors include: her husband, James C. Martin, of the home; daughter, Sonia Sue King, and her husband Jim, Johnson City; brother, H. M. Beard, Jr., Jonesborough; and sister Margaret Beard Davis, Kingsport. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 2:00 pm Saturday in the Morris-Baker South Chapel with Dr. William Gwaltney officiating. Special music will be provided by Mr. Mike Imboden. Pallbearers will be: Harold J. Licht, Robert Mantone, Gordon Sutton, Tom Carr, W.T. Mathis, and Dean Small. Following the funeral service, family and friends will proceed to Monte Vista Memorial Park for committal services. The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 pm Saturday at Morris-Baker.
