Mary Hurley Stafford

April 27, 1931 — February 19, 2020

Mary Hurley Stafford, 88, went to be with Our Lord Jesus Christ on February 19, 2020 at Lakebridge Nursing Home in Johnson City, TN.

Mary, a native of Pembroke, NC, was the daughter of the late Kenzie Driggers and Archie Lee Driggers.

Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, flower arrangements, cooking delicious meals for her family and singing her favorite song “Chocolate Ice Cream Cone” at her annual family reunions. She was a Christian and instilled the love of Christ to her children by setting a shining example for them to follow throughout their lifetime.

For many years of her life, Mary raised four children as a single parent by working midnight shifts at the Leon Fernbach Textile Mill in Johnson City, TN. Her accomplishments later in life were owner and operator of “Children’s Day Care Center” as well as “The Basement Shop” where she sold children’s clothing at affordable rates.

Mary was preceded in death by her children’s father, Richard E. Hurley and her devoted husband of 27 years and step father to her children, Thomas Grady Stafford.

Surviving Mary are her children: Penny Blalock and husband Steve Blalock, Dean Hurley and wife Vicky Hurley, Teresa Bowman and husband Ben Bowman and Terry Hurley and wife Teresa Hurley; four grandchildren: Mary Ann Imes, Jessica Wells, Emma Bowman and Cody Hurley along with her three great grandchildren: Jacob Imes, Charlotte (Charlie) Imes and Michael Bennett. Also are several nieces and nephews. Mary’s brothers and sisters are: Earl Driggers, Harold Driggers and Kenzie Driggers, Jr. along with Leslie Anderson and Virginia Beam and half-brother Jackie Driggers, Mary’s step brother: Randy Hewitt and step sister: Candice Barns Driggers. Mary is preceded in death by her sisters: Carolyn Dial, Sarah Self, Cindy Honeycutt, Judy Owens and step sister Rhonda Driggers.

All of Mary’s family would like to extend their appreciation for the help and support of: Dr. Jason Hatjioannou, Ashely Street with Silver Angels, Pastor Ryan Wagoner and Ms Judy Hensley, (RN) with Amedisys Hospice and the entire staff at Lakebridge Nursing Home in Johnson City, TN.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 22, 2020 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in Johnson City, TN with the funeral service starting at 12:00 pm in the Oak Chapel.

A committal service will follow at 1:15 pm at Washington County Memory Gardens located at 113 Memory Gardens Lane, Johnson City, TN. Pastor Ryan Wagoner will be officiating both funeral and committal services.
