Rachel Benfield Slaughter

February 29, 1912 — March 5, 2008

Rachel Woodby Benfield Slaughter, 96, formerly of 814 Exum Street, Johnson City went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at North Side Hospital. Mrs. Slaughter was a native of Unicoi County and had lived most of her life in Carter and Washington Counties. She was a daughter of the late Charlie and Rhoda Carver Woodby. Mrs. Slaughter attended the Douglastown and Green Pine schools. Mrs. Slaughter was a homemaker and caretaker for her father, brother and husbands. She was a member of the Union Church of Christ and attended the Keystone FWB Church. Mrs. Slaughter is preceded in death by : her parents; her first husband, Paul K. Benfield in 1978; her second husband, Bentley Slaughter in 1995; a brother, Dave Woodby; two sisters, Dora and husband John Price, Lora and husband Dave Morton; two sons, Odis Benfield and Vernon Benfield; and a grandson, Terry Benfield. Survivors include: four sons, Paul 'Gene'? and wife Hazel Benfield, C.A. Benfield, Larry and wife Margie Benfield, all of Jonesborough, and Roger and wife Dauneice Benfield of Johnson City; thirteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive; special friends, Barbara Smith and Lola Fowler. The funeral service for Rachel Woodby Benfield Slaughter will be conducted at 8 PM Thursday, March 6, 2008 in the Morris-Baker North Chapel. Rev. Bill Greer will officiate. Music will be by Janet Willis, soloist. The committal service will be conducted at 1 PM Friday in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 12:50 PM Friday. Active pallbearers will be Glenn Sheets, Stanley Rice, Johnny Price, Billy Price, Cory Gross, and Robert Benfield. The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday prior to the service.
