Raymond S. Long

August 11, 1920 — March 12, 2014

Raymond S. Long, 93, died March 12, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born August 11, 1920 in Chatfield, Ohio to the late Samuel and Carrie Lust Long. Raymond moved from Galion, Ohio to Tennessee in 1978 with North Electric / ITT Company. He retired in 1981 after 43 years of employment. Raymond was a veteran of WWII having served in the U. S. Navy (Seabees). He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Galion, Ohio. Mr. Long is survived by a granddaughter and her husband, Tina and Chad Bruckman; great grandchildren Chastity Hall and Bryan Bruckman; a great great granddaughter Amzie Hackney. His wife of 52 years, Mattie McCaulley Long in 1998; a daughter, J. Dianne Long Montgomery; son Mark R. Long; grandson, Heath E. Montgomery; three brothers and four sisters preceded Raymond in death. He leaves behind a strong legacy. It speaks of the man he was. His Christ-like example of considering others more important than himself was exhibited within his family, in his neighborhood and throughout his community. Precious to him were his loving family, the friends from ITT who transferred to Tennessee with him, who called themselves 'The Tuesday Morning Breakfast Club'?. He also treasured his darling neighbors and devoted friends whom he considered family. His life was deeply enriched by these dear people. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Mountain Home National Cemetery at 1:00 pm under the direction of Nikki Hunt. The U. S. Navy will accord military honors and Brian Sharp will play the bagpipes. The family will receive friends from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home then leave in procession to the cemetery. A celebration of his life will be held at the home of Steve and Kathie Hunt following the service.
