Richard Eugene Scranton

September 7, 1935 — February 2, 2016

Richard Eugene Scranton, 80, Johnson City, died peacefully at his home on February 2, 2016 following a lengthy illness. Richard ?Dick' Scranton was born in 1935, and raised in Utica, NY. He attended St. Francis Catholic School and Mohawk Valley Community College. He was in the South Utica Boys and American Legion Drum Corps as a tenor drummer. Mr. Scranton served in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he reached the rank of Sergeant and was stationed at Brooklyn Naval Yard, where he served as the Admiral?s Guard and in the USMC Honor Guard. After his service, Mr. Scranton worked as manager of quality control at Sperry in Utica, NY and was also the photo finish cameraman at Vermon Downs. He was on the board of directors of the U.S. Figure Skating Association in Clinton, NY. He continued his career in the technology world after relocating with Sperry to Johnson City, TN in 1976 and again to Pleasanton, CA in 1987. He retired and moved back to Johnson City in 2002. After marrying his wife Helen, together they raised three children. Richard was an avid swimmer, skier and expert marksman who loved to hunt. He served his community and Catholic Church faithfully. He is remembered for his love of music, his sense of humor, his perpetual smile and his love of family. Survivors include: his wife of 60 years, Helen Misiaszek Scranton; two daughters, Sharon Scranton Johnston and her husband Steve, of Placitas, NM, Deborah (Debbie) Scranton Honeycutt and her husband Robert, of Gray, TN; one son, Richard Scranton and his wife Carol Slemp Scranton, of Framingham, MA; and three grandchildren, Matthew and Kevin Scranton, and Miranda Honeycutt. The family would especially like to thank Jenny Hylton and the staff at Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice for their expert and loving care. The family of Richard Scranton will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM Saturday, February 6, 2016 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church in Johnson City, TN. A funeral Mass will immediately follow the visitation. Boone Dam Post #4933 will accord military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 3101 Browns Mill Rd #6, Johnson City, TN 37604, or the Alzheimer?s Association, 207 N Boone St #1500, Johnson City, TN 37604.
