Robert J. 'Bob'? Hughes, 73, 134 Hilldale Ave., Gray, died Friday, March 21, 2008 at his residence. Mr. Hughes was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County. He was a son of the late Reverend Hobart and Ida Belle Vance Hughes. Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. He was retired from Giant Food Market and Food Lion Inc. and a former employee of the City of Johnson City, Parks and Rec. Division. Mr. Hughes boxed in Golden Gloves for 12 years and was known as 'Little Red'?. He was five times Upper East TN Champion and Southern Golden Gloves Champion. Mr. Hughes coached boxing for young men for twenty-five years. In 2007 he received the Lonnie E. Lowe Most Outstanding Friend of Recreation Award. He was a member of Greenvale Baptist Church and the Arcana Masonic Lodge # 489. Mr. Hughes will be missed by all his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Connie Estep Hughes; one daughter, Mitzi Gillin, Gray; one son, Carmen Hughes and his wife, Crystal, Sulphur Springs; three grandsons, Kevin Gillin and his wife, Heather, Piney Flats, Brad Gillin, Gray, Robert Hughes and Laura, Sulfur Springs; two great grandsons, Izaiah Slone Hughes and Matthew Joseph Gillin; one sister, Judy Blevins and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service with Masonic rites for Mr. Hughes will be conducted at 8 PM Monday, March 24, 2008 from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Reverend Paul Manis and Mr. Travis Shaffer will officiate. Masonic Rites will be conducted by Arcana Masonic Lodge # 489. Graveside services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 1:30 PM and travel in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 PM until service time Monday at the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be Kevin Gillin, Brad Gillin, Robert Hughes, Dean Tucker, Bob Curtis, Bill Gortney, Mike Whitson and Frank Inman. Honorary pallbearers will be former fellow employees of the City of Johnson City Parks and Recreation Division and the men of Greenvale Baptist Church. The family expresses a special thanks to Dr. Charles Famoyin and the staff of McCleod Cancer Center, Dr. Kyle Colvett and the Staff of the Regional Cancer Center, Dr. Jeff Farrow, Dr. Michael Jewett, the Smokey Mountain Home Health and Hospice, especially Steve and Bob.
