Robert Edward Powers, age 87, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, came into this world on January 20, 1933 and left this world on January 20, 2020 at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tennessee.
Robert was born in Washington County, Tennessee to Manze Franklin Powers and Mary Hite Powers.
Robert was a former charter member of Calvary Freewill Baptist Church, a former member of Boones Creek Freewill Baptist Church, and he was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Johnson City. He was also a radio evangelist for 25 years for WMCH in Church Hill.
Robert served in the U.S. Army for 15 years where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He retired from Eastman Kodak in 1992 after over 30 years of service. Robert and his wife, Ruth, were active members of the Jonesborough Senior Citizen Center.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Manze and Oma Hite Power; brothers, Jimmy Powers and Pete Powers; and sisters, Paulette Samples, Betty Willis, and Reba Blakely.
Left to cherish his memory include his wife, Ruth Tester Powers; stepchildren, Artie E. Edwards, Jr. of Jonesborough, Joy (and Ronnie) Mann of Jonesborough, Daniel N. Edwards (and Margaret) of Jonesborough, and Rita Hartung of Germany; grandchildren, Heather (and Christopher) Williams, Andrew (and Kristen) Mann, Brittany (and Billy) Godfrey, and Jesse Edwards; stepgrandchild, Rico Hartung; greatgrandchildren, Chelsea Williams, Carolina Mann, Addison Huffine, Jaxson Huffine, Kinslee Edwards, Ivaleigh Mann, Mason Godfrey, Haygen Jenkins, and Jacob Jenkins; brother, Harry Wayne (and Carol) Powers of Owassa, Oklahoma; and several other nieces and nephews.
Robert’s family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, and begin at 7:00 p.m., under the direction of Pastor Rob Lechner. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at Eastern Star Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery (153 Eastern Star Ext, Kingsport, TN 37663). Active pallbearers include: Andrew Mann, Chris Williams, Billy Godfrey, Jesse Edwards, Gregg Powers, and Marty Willis. Honorary pallbearers include: Artie Edwards, Danny Edwards, Ronnie Mann, Craig Powers, Travis Baker, and Sonny Willis.
