Dr. Sam W. Huddleston III, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at his vacation home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina, Dr. Huddleston served during World War II in the United States Navy in the submarine service. He studied engineering at North Carolina State University, attended Cornell University and graduated from Vanderbilt University. He then graduated from Vanderbilt University Medical School. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery training and served as Chief Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery at Vanderbilt. All of his life he loved and studied the sciences. His quest for knowledge was an inspiration to his family. Dr. Huddleston moved to Johnson City in 1956 with his family and joined Dr. Tom Ellis at The Ellis-Huddleston Clinic. He retired from Appalachian Orthopaedic Associates after practicing for 49 years. A pioneer in outdoor sports in this area, he enjoyed many outdoor activities. He was an instrument-rated commercial pilot, a championship sailplane pilot, an avid snow skier, enjoyed white water kayaking, brought windsurfing to the area, and was an avid runner for 40 years. He was the founding member of the Deep Powder Medical Society and one of the founders of the annual Medical Updates meeting. He is survived by his wife, June Hallyburton Huddleston; his children, Donnan C. Huddleston of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Dr. Sam W. Huddleston IV and his wife Peggy, of Johnson City, Dr. Tom L. Huddleston and his wife Cecile, of Johnson City; his sister, Maryanne Huddleston Hasek, Kingsport, TN and six grandchildren, Sam V, Haynes, Lauren, Alex, Thomas and Stewart. A celebration of life service will be held Sunday, March 26th at 2:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday the 25th from 6:00 until 9:00 PM.
