Mr. Ted E. ?Bayway' Allen, 71, Johnson City, was called home Saturday, January 2, 2016. Ted was born in Smyth County, VA, but was a resident of Johnson City for the last 69 years. Mr. Allen was the youngest child of the late Charles Herbert and Nelli Shew Allen. Mr. Allen attended Larmar School in his youth before going to work to help support his family. Ted was of the Baptist faith, and a member of Clifton View Baptist church since his childhood. Mr. Allen was a person of many talents and skills. He enjoyed working with is hands. In his younger days, he worked at the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Johnson City. Later, Ted began working as a tow truck operator. He was also a competitor at the old Sportsman Speedway, and operated his own towing and recovery business part time for many years. Eventually, Ted went to work as a transport driver for Royal Oil/Super Oil Company and found his calling, where he got the nickname ?Bayway'. From his professional skills to helping stranded motorists or fellow drivers, he held the true meaning of a truck driver on an open road. After his retirement, Mr. Allen enjoyed staying busy by working outdoors, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. He became a fixture to any of his neighbors who needed help with a job or an adventure. He was also a mentor to young, professional drivers from across the region.
