Terry Sheldon Bloom

Dr. Terry Sheldon Bloom passed away Friday, April 18, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Baltimore, MD on February 19, 1943, to immigrant parents from Russia. The family moved to Miami, FL in 1946, where he lived until graduating from Miami Senior High School in 1961. In high school, he was a member of the AOA honor society, Civitan Club, and a member of the marching and concert bands. He then attended the University of Florida from 1961 to 1968, at which time he graduated from medical school with a MD degree. He then did two years of post graduate training in surgery at Parkland Memorial Hospital which is associated with the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, TX. He then entered the United States Air Force with the rank of Captain and was assigned as a flight surgeon on Okinawa, Japan at Kadina airbase. During that time, he obtained a private pilots license through the Air Force flying club program, and retained a love of aviation throughout the rest of his life. He separated from the Air Force in 1973 with the rank of Major. Dr. Bloom returned to the University of Florida in 1973 for specialty training in Radiation Oncology. He joined the staff of Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach, FL in 1977 as a practicing radiation oncologist until his retirement in 2004. He continued to work as a temporary radiation oncologist, traveling to various practices in Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota. Dr. Bloom relocated to Johnson City, TN in 2009. He was a member of the Bnai Sholom congregation in Bristol, TN. Dr. Bloom is preceded in death by his parents Phillip Milton Bloom and mother Rose Toback Bloom. He is survived by his loving wife, Lydia Kathryn Bloom, son David Bloom, MD, PhD and wife Lisa of Dallas, TX, a daughter, Alyssa Payson and husband Jay of Altamonte Springs, FL, step-daughter, Melanie Anders and fiancé, Shayan Toreihi, Titusville, FL, sister, Joan Dubov and husband David of Boca Raton, FL, brother, Alan Bloom and wife Joan of Alexandria, VA and 7 grandchildren.
