Verda Oakes Hughes, 100, 710 Treadway Street, died Monday, October 9, 2006 at her residence. Mrs. Hughes was an Avery County, NC native and had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Charles Oakes and Ebbie Oakes. . Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her husband, Cephus C. Hughes in 1994; one daughter, Bernice Sexton, two sisters and two brothers. She was retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Walnut Christian Church. Survivors include: a son, Paul W. Hughes, Sr. of Marion, VA, a sister, Frankie Blair of NC; three grandsons, Paul W. Hughes, Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Glenelg, MD, Robert L. Hughes and his wife, Paula of Baltimore, MD and Charles Stanton and his wife Janet of Johnson City; a granddaughter Patricia A. Hall and her husband, Kenneth of Kansas; three great grandsons, Paul W. Hughes, III of Glenelg, MD, Matthew and Joseph Stanton of Johnson City; three great granddaughters, Nicole M. Hughes of Glenelg, MD, Karen Grosser and her husband James of Missouri and Vanessa Stanton of Johnson City, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Mrs. Hughes will be conducted at 8 PM Thursday, October 12, 2006 from the Morris-Baker North Chapel. Pastor Tim Carlson will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 AM Friday and travel in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday at the funeral home.
