William C. 'Bill' Spain, age 80, of 608 Foxx Street, Johnson City, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at Appalachian Christian Village. He was a native of Washington County and a lifelong resident of Johnson City, the son of the late James Herbert Spain and the late Lottie Mae Holder Spain. Mr. Spain was an accountant, employed by the City of Johnson City, where he served as a bookkeeper, City Recorder, and acted as City Manager for an interim period. He was a World War II United States Navy veteran.. Mr. Spain was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. He was a past member of Johnson City Kiwanis Club. He coached Bolton Block Little League baseball team for 19 years. Bolton Block was one of the most successful teams in Johnson City history. As an avid golfer, he was a lifetime member of Pine Oaks Golf Course. Mr. Spain was a supporter of Science Hill High School, ETSU and UT athletics. Preceding Mr. Spain in death was a brother, Lloyd Spain; and a sister, Mabel Sheffield. He is survived by his wife, Lottie McIntyre Spain; six children, Melinda Parker and her husband, Woody, of Nashville, Larry Spain and his wife, Brenda, of Cookeville, Debbie Pealer and her husband, Rev. Bill, of Bristol, Tennessee, Steve Spain, of Johnson City, Karen Pratt and her husband, Jeff, of Seymour, Tennessee, and Gail Marsh and her husband, Kevin, of Salisbury, North Carolina; fourteen grandchildren, Joe Spain and his wife, Olivia, Jamie Pealer and his wife, Jennifer, Mindy Wynne and her husband, Brandon, Julianne Brown and her husband, Johnny, Wesley Parker and his wife, Trish, Travis Parker, Ben Pealer, Josh, Jarrod and Jordan Spain, Brittany and Brooke Honeycutt, Kelsi Pratt, Lesa Wise and her husband, Travis, Jessica Marsh, Lindsay Jeffee and her husband, Kevin, and Shane Pratt and his wife, Crystal. Four sisters, Joyce Holbrook, Barbara Estep, Brenda Hubbard, all of Johnson City, and Ruby Sey, of Michigan; and one brother, Ralph Spain, of Olympia, Washington. Great grandchildren are Ashlee Parker, Jacob Pealer, Emma Wynne, Adreanna Spain, Miranda and Jaden Pratt, Savannah Jeffee and Kylie Wise and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services and burial will be at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Saturday at 3:00 PM. Rev. Reece Harris will officiate. The family will receive friends at Morris-Baker from 12:30 until 2:30 PM Saturday. Pallbearers will be grandsons, honorary pallbearers will be Mr. Spain?s Sunday School Class, Andy Chapo, Jack Lewis, Jack Davis and John Keefer, Dr. Clarence Spannuth, Dr. Jim Wilson and Dr. Wayne Tongco. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Alzheimer?s Association, American Parkinson?s Association or to the American Heart Association. The family expresses special thanks to the staffs of the Johnson City Medical Center, Adventa Hospice and the lower level at Appalachian Christian Village. Mr. Spain was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son and brother.
