William Dude Mcelroy

June 23, 1918 — February 25, 2016

William Fulton ?Dude' McElroy, 97, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at his home after a brief illness. He was a native of Norton, VA and resided in Johnson City, TN for the past 21 years. Dude was a 1938 graduate of Norton High School. He also attended the National Business College of Roanoke and school of banking at Rutgers University. He served in the U.S. Army/Air Force from 1941 until 1946. Upon his return to Norton, he began his 42-year banking career. Dude became very involved in the community. A few examples of his many achievements in his life are as follows: Commander American Legion Post 143; Master Mason Lodge #259; Royal Arch Chapter #30; Kazim Temple, Roanoke; Wise County Shrine Club; charter member and past president of Norton Lions Club; a member of Norton City Council where he served as vice mayor; Norton Planning Commission; Chairman of the Lenowisco Planning Commission; Southwest Virginia management association; and a recipient of the Lions of Virginia and the Melvin Jones Fellow Lions Club International Foundation Humanitarian Awards. Dude was an avid golfer and made a hole in one at the Lonesome Pine Country Club where he was a member and served on the board. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, William Jackson and Nettie Osborne McElroy, and brothers, Ray and Brad. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife, Lucille ?Lucy' McElroy; son, Michael McElroy of Orlando, FL; daughter, Peggy Voitlein, and husband Mike, of Jonesborough, TN; step daughter, Sandy Holcomb, and husband Steve, of Mooresville, NC; sister, Alice Harrison of Atlanta, GA; grandson, Anthony Crisp, and wife Miranda; and great granddaughter, Lindsay, all of Troutman, NC. The family of William ?Dude' McElroy will receive friends from 2 pm until 4 pm Sunday, February 28, 2016 in Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A graveside service is scheduled for 1:45 pm Monday, February 29, 2016 at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Minister, family, and friends are requested to meet at Morris-Baker by 1:15 pm Monday to go in procession to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected friends of the family. Honorary pallbearers will be the ?Romeo Club' of Hardees West Market Street. Military honors will be accorded. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials go to the Niswonger Children?s Hospital, 400 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, TN 37604 or the Johnson City Medical Center Hospice, 509 Med Tech Pkwy. Ste. 200, Johnson City, TN 37604.
