William John Christian Dr. Fisher

Dr. William ?Bill' J. Fisher, 94, of Johnson City, passed away Friday, June 3, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center. Bill was born in Detroit, Michigan, resided in Boulder, Colorado, and had been a Johnson City resident since 1966. Bill and his loving wife Joan B. Fisher met in Colorado on a Sunday at a Walgreen?s lunch counter. Joan and Bill married at Central Woodward Christian Church in Detroit, MI, on August 30, 1957. Bill graduated from Southeastern High School in Detroit in 1939; Hillsdale College in 1943 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History and Education; Syracuse University in 1947 with a Master?s Degree in Social Studies; University of Colorado-Boulder in 1956 with a Master?s Degree in Business Management and Finance and in 1963 with a Doctorate in Education for Social Studies Education and Business Management. Bill served in the U.S. Army Air Corp 1943-1946, taught in Detroit, MI, public schools for 9 years, and taught at University of Colorado-Boulder until 1966. Bill taught at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) from 1966 to 1992 as a Professor of Business Administration. He enjoyed teaching consumer education and personal finance. Bill co-founded the East Tennessee Educators Credit Union; served on the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System Board of Trustees for 15 years; served in the ETSU chapters of American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and Tennessee Education Association, Southern Management Association, American Society of Personnel Administration and many more. Bill?s achievements included: ETSU Distinguished Faculty Member; ETSU Faculty Senate leader; ETSU College of Business Faculty Excellence for Service award; 1991 Philander P. Claxton Award by the AAUP; Phi Delta Kappa for 40 years and 1996 emeritus member; Tennessee Council and State of Franklin Council for the Social Studies; 2011 Johnson City Kiwanian of the Year; 2012 ETSU Alumni Association Honorary Alumni Award; recognized by ETSU Retirees Association for his tireless efforts to improve conditions for the faculty, staff, and retirees of the university. Bill was preceded in death by Joan B. Fisher, his loving wife of 58 years, and by his parents John G. Fisher and Ida E. Fisher. Bill is survived by his two children Thomas (Herlynda) Fisher of Mukilteo, WA, and Eric (Faith) Fisher of Manassas, VA; one granddaughter Mia Fisher of Manassas, VA. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 8, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with services to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill?s name to your favorite charity.
