Andrew F. (Fred) Kaufmann, Jr. was born April 18, 1943, in St. Louis, MO and passed on July 30, 2026. He was the son of Andrew F. Kaufmann, Sr. and Kaino Karin (nee Leino) Kaufmann. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, a Master's from the University of Southern California, and a PhD from the University of Arkansas.

Fred spent twenty plus years in the military serving in both the Marines and Army where he was awarded various citations including the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Combat Action Ribbon, and others. During this time, he spent six years overseas including two tours in Vietnam.

After military retirement, Fred taught as a Professor of History at universities in Arkansas, Montana, and Tennessee. He also served as president/chairman and in other positions in the Elbert Kinser Detachment of the Marine Corps League, the Middle Nolichucky Watershed Alliance, and the Greene County Fishing & Hunting Club.

A Roman Catholic, Fred was a member of St. Mary's Church for 25 years where he served as head of security.

Fred leaves behind Charlene Mary Kaufmann, his wife of 58 years, the love of his life, and his beloved daughter Tamara Welton of Knoxville, one brother, David Kaufmann of Maine; two nieces Erica Dubois of Maine, Anastasia Kaufmann of Kentucky; and Nephew Jonathan Kaufmann of Maine.

The Family will receive friends and family Sunday August 9th, 2026, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM at Morris Baker Funeral Home. There will be a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Johnson City on Monday August 10 at 1:00 PM with interment immediately following at Monte Vista Memorial Park. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society or Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
