Ann Scott Sharpe

Ann Ready Scott Sherrill Sharpe was born in Fayetteville, TN on June 29, 1942, to Virginia Ready Scott and Robert Walter Scott. She is survived by her husband, Elonzo Frederick Sharpe, Jr., her sons Edwin Scott Sherrill (Jennine Moritz) and Robert Wes Sherrill, and her grandchildren, Will Sherrill, Anna Sherrill, and Molly Sherrill. She is preceded in death by her parents and her older brother, Robert “Bobby” Walter Scott, Jr.

Ann grew up in Johnson City, TN. She graduated from Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University (ETSU), majoring in speech pathology and audiology. In high school Ann had many interests including journalism. She was editor of the school paper, and officer in classes and student body, student government, and JROTC. At ETSU she was a JROTC sponsor for 3 years and went to Washington DC for the cherry blossom festival parade. She was active in Greek life as part of Kappa Delta sorority and was in several honor societies.

Ann started the hearing-impaired program for Knoxville city schools. While living in Knoxville, her first son, Scott, was born at the kick-off of the UT-Army Football game. Her second son, Wes, was born in Madison, TN when she was working in the Nashville metro schools as a speech therapist.

Ann and her family moved to Wilmington, NC, which was her first time at the beach. She raised her boys there, spending many hours supporting them on the tennis courts, basketball games and at the beach. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, where she taught Sunday School and was on the interfaith Kindergarten board. Their circle of friends from Dupont became their family. and Ann enjoyed the place and the people.

Ann’s family moved to Chattanooga in 1981, where Ann continued her work in speech therapy until she was offered a job at First Federal Savings & Loan in marketing. Ann then lived in Sewanee, TN for 25 years. She worked at the university in a variety of positions – serving students, alumnae and friends of the university. For years she was in hospitality at both the original Sewanee Inn and Rebel’s Rest. She was then a dorm “matron” where she helped in any way asked. She decorated the newly built Humphries dorm and also during this time opened an antiques business, “Anns-tiques”. She helped with the opening of Mooney’s Emporium. At Sewanee Ann made hundreds of cookies for dorm meetings, was involved in many organizations, including being head of the altar guild and decorating for Lessons and Carols (she loved polishing silver!). Ann treasured friendships with many including Pat Jackson who introduced her to “the Episcopal way of life – when to stand up/sit down/kneel”. She and Pat took many trips together including to Cape May, London, and Charleston. She embraced learning about Sewanee and the surrounding areas during her time on “the Mountain”.

Ann finally retired at age 72 when she reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Elonzo Frederick “Fred” Sharpe. Ann and Fred married in 2014, and she moved to Pine Mountain, Georgia. Soon after, they returned to their childhood home together: Johnson City, TN. Ann was a member of First Methodist Church in Johnson City, and active in the Monday Club, Merry Wives, and numerous bridge groups. She served on many committees and helped with ministries of the church, club house and social committees of their living community. Hospitality was her superpower.

Ann was a beloved “Granny Annie” to William Stewart Sherrill, Anna Foster Sherrill, and Maura “Molly” Scott Sherrill, who cherish their memories of their time with her in Sewanee and during her many visits to their home throughout the years.

Ann/Mom/”Granny Annie” will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Ann’s family is forever grateful to her many friends who called, visited and sent cards, flowers and meals, which brightened Ann’s days and helped so very much during her illness. Ann and the family felt held in prayer. Ann’s dear friend, Lynda Wexler, was a steady and faithful companion on this difficult journey with daily visits and careful attention to Ann’s needs. Ann’s family is also grateful to the care provide by Amedysis Hospice and The Village Caregiving this past month.

Ann’s funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 15th at First United Methodist Church. Reverend Jodie Ihfe and Reverend Michael Lester will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service beginning at 10:00am.

At a later date, Ann’s ashes will be scattered in the little Sewanee cemetery where she will join many friends, especially her dear friend, Pat.
