Barbara "Babs" Rose Shaffer, age 70, went home to be with the Lord on March 29, 2026.
Born on January 7, 1956, Barbara was the oldest of three siblings. She spent most of her life in Abingdon and Bristol, Virginia, before moving to Bristol, Tennessee in 2019. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Thurman and Dorothy Rose, and by her husband of 37 years, Kelly Shaffer, her childhood sweetheart, who affectionately called her "Lucy."
Barbara is survived by her devoted daughter, Brandy Haynes, and son-in-law, Ed Haynes; her cherished twin grandsons, Carson and Ethan Haynes; her sister, Vicky Hardin; her brother, David Rose and sister-in-law, Cheri Rose; nieces Tory Hudson, Kala Rose, and Robin Rose; along with many other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Barbara dedicated nearly 30 years of her life working as a phlebotomist. She truly loved her work at the hospital, forming meaningful connections with her patients and coworkers. Her kindness, compassion, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Barbara loved the Lord with her whole heart. That faith was evident in the way she lived-with kindness, forgiveness, and a gentle spirit. She had a special empathy for both people and animals and was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Barbara found joy in life's simple pleasures. She was an avid reader, enjoyed watching movies, and could happily spend hours shopping. She adored her many "fur babies" over the years, as well as anyone else's, and treasured time spent with family-especially on vacations to the beach.
In the last five years of her life, Barbara resided at NHC Healthcare, where she continued to embrace life with resilience and grace. She spent her time reading, watching movies, and playing games on her tablet, while also forming new friendships. Even in difficult circumstances, she remained full of life, choosing to live each day with hope and gratitude.
Barbara carried a light within her that could only come from a strong faith in God. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her family is forever grateful for the time they shared with her and for the blessing of her life.
